Evangelion 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance (ヱヴァンゲリヲン新劇場版:破) is the second film in the Rebuild of Evangelion movie series. It will premiere in Japan on June 27, 2009. As of March 14, 2009, two trailers have been released, along with a poster revealing key terms and names from the movie in chronological order.

The movie will introduce Asuka Langley Shikinami (formerly "Soryu", and now with the rank of Captain), Ryoji Kaji, and the new character Mari Illustrious Makinami, along with Eva-02, Eva-03, Eva-05, and Eva-06. A combination of familiar (to NGE veterans) and newly-designed Angels will appear over the course of the film. New locations (such as Betania Base and Tabgha Base) will also feature.

Eva 2.0 will depart from the original much more extensively than 1.0, with a greater emphasis on new material, although little is known about the plot at this time. Elements from several TV episodes seem to be present in some form, namely Episodes 08, 12, 15, 17, 18, and 19.

Yuko Miyamura and Koichi Yamadera are both confirmed to reprise their roles as Asuka and Kaji, respectively, and Maaya Sakamoto is joining the cast to play Mari. Mugihito has also been listed on the cast as specifically playing "Keel Lorenz" (he only appeared as the "SOUND ONLY" Seele-01 monolith in the first film).[1]

Angels

Based on the scant available information (namely poster key words and the trailers), the film appears to feature five Angels, including two that are original to the Rebuild continuity. In the potential order of appearance:

Eva2-0 trailer C35 newangel.gif
New Angel #1: "Tunnel Angel". Possesses a stylized face vaguely reminiscent of Zeruel, exposed jaw muscles like Gaghiel, and a narrow body with what looks like a long, skeletal tail. In the first theatrical trailer, it advances through a dark corridor (resembling the one Eva-05 uses in the preview from Eva 1.0), large eye sockets lighting up to set off an explosion. It will probably fight Eva-05 at Bethania Base.
Eva2-0 trailer C33 legs.gif
New Angel #2: "Legs" or "Clock Angel". Seen in the first trailer only via two stilt-like "legs" walking on the ocean. When a "foot" touches the water, an A.T. Field-like projection spreads out and causes what appears to be instantaneous frosting. The destroyed warship seen in the same frame implies that the Angel is incredibly large.

Although not officially confirmed, what is probably the uppermost section of the same Angel appears in the second theatrical trailer. It resembles the hands of a clock, with a Sachiel-like face acting as the "first hand", and a red "second hand" (possibly another face facing the opposite direction) behind this. Both are supported by a tall, thin "neck" that goes off the bottom of the screen. (Low quality image.) ([20_trailer2_clock_angel.png High quality image)

This Angel will probably replace Gaghiel as the featured opponent in Eva-02's debut battle. The new Aerial Recon S-Type Equipment may be intended to deal with the issue of the Angel's size.

Eva2-0 trailer C35 atf.jpg
Sahaquiel(?): Appears to play a similar role as in the original show. Poster key words and a cut in the first trailer indicate that the N2 aerial depth charge attack on Sahaquiel will be depicted, carried out by spacecraft mobilized from the lunar Tabgha Base. While being attacked, Sahaquiel is obscured completely by a rapidly fluctuating, Ireul-like "multicellular" A.T. Field. The first trailer also contains multiple cuts of the three main Evas engaged in the Sahaquiel-"catching" operation. The second trailer contains similar cuts (including one of Eva-01 sprinting), but again, does not show the Angel itself.
Eva2-0 trailer C34 eva03.jpg
Bardiel (?): The available trailers indicate that, as in Episode 18, Eva-03 goes out of control, the other Evas are sortied to stop its advance, and Eva-01 is ultimately activated on the dummy system to destroy it. Since Bardiel itself is not discernible in any of the available footage, that a parasite Angel is still responsible for the incident is, for now, still speculation. A glowing blue mass (Bardiel's main body?) is visible on Eva-03's back where the entry plug should be inserted.
Eva2-0 trailer C042 zer.jpg
Zeruel: Its brief appearance in the first trailer indicates that the design of the face has been changed slightly. Piloting shots of Rei, Asuka, and Shinji in the preview, borrowed directly from Episode 19, suggest that at least certain elements of Zeruel's assault on Nerv will be left intact. The inclusion of the keyword "Predation" on the poster implies that Zeruel will suffer a similar fate as in NGE.

Trailer Summaries

These will be trimmed down to resemble "summaries" somewhat more when the movie is actually released.

Preview

"ADAMS"
Mari looks at an array of glowing crosses

A preview following the credits of Eva 1.0, structured the same as the "Next Episode Previews" in Neon Genesis Evangelion, complete with the same musical theme, voice-over by Misato, and promise of more fan service.

It opens with an introduction to the Evas scheduled to appear: The "provisional" Eva-05 on an underground rail, Eva-02 being air-dropped (outfitted with the new "S-type Equipment"), Eva-04's explosion, Eva-03 (infected by Bardiel), and Eva-06 descending from the Moon. The text "ADAMS" and a cryptic image of several ghostly, vaguely humanoid figures are flashed on the screen. The text "LILIN+?" then appears, followed by several shots of the "human" cast: Kaji and Gendo (as seen at the end of Episode 08); Misato slapping Ritsuko (recycled from Episode 16); Asuka, Rei, and Shinji (from the Zeruel battle in 19); and Kaworu (smiling against a dusky sky). Finally, the new character Mari is seen from behind, looking up at multiple giant glowing pink crucifixes, followed by a close-up of her face, a fleeing flock of birds reflected in her glasses.

Theatrical Trailer #1

Released in Japanese cinemas on March 14, 2009, set to "FLY ME TO THE MOON (IN OTHER WORDS) 2007 MIX" by Hikaru Utada (same as 1.0's theatrical trailer). Yahoo! Japan subsequently released a 27 second long "special version" edit, which rehashed some of the clips to a remix of the "Next Episode Preview" theme, along with hosting the original theatrical trailer[2].

Several familiar scenes are indicated, including: the Evas during the operation to "catch" Sahaquiel (although Sahaquiel itself is not depicted), Shinji and Gendo visiting Yui's "grave", Eva-03/Bardiel's attack and subsequent destruction, and Zeruel's attack. Some kind of maritime event is also implicated.

Eva-01

It opens with several Eva-related shots:

  • Eva-01 (presumably under influence of dummy plug) rearing up and roaring. Blood flies up from the bottom of the screen. The actual teeth seem to be visible, but they are red rather than white.
  • A pilot's hand (presumably Mari's) inputting commands into cockpit console buttons.
  • Monitor screen with text changing from "Internal Power Supply Mode (Disabled)" to "External Power Supply Mode". It seems to depict a schematic of Eva-05's power collectors shifting position.
  • Eva-05 seen from the front, visor and pylons lighting up as it activates.
  • Eva-01 rearing back, then lashing its hand forward. (Corresponds to shot in Episode 18 where it prepares to punch Eva-03's head.)
  • Eva-00 leaping in mid-sprint to avoid telephone lines. (From Sahaquiel operation.) The color scheme is unchanged from 1.0, although pylons have been added.
  • Eva-02 running while paired progressive knives emerge from the pylons. (From Sahaquiel operation?)
  • Eva-01's foot touching off the ground. (From Sahaquiel operation.)
  • Eva-01 unleashing its A.T. Field. (From Sahaquiel operation.)
Asuka

Several character shots follow:

  • Shinji wearing a polo shirt, hanging onto a railing and talking to someone (Kaji?). Probably on a ship.
  • Misato, with a dusky sky in the background, smiling and talking.
  • Asuka in plugsuit, standing on top of Eva-02 (?), with hands on hips. Followed by a closeup of Asuka talking with an intense look on her face. (Similar to when she tells Shinji in Episode 08, "Come with me.")
  • Rei sitting in her dimly-lit apartment, looking at something in her hands.
  • Gendo with VTOL in background. (Presumably being picked up from Yui's grave site.)
  • A flustered-looking Ritsuko (apparently arguing with someone).
  • Shinji in what seems to be Misato's storage room (i.e., after getting kicked out of his by Asuka), wearing SDAT earbuds, hoisting himself off the floor.

Several "environmental" shots follow, including:

  • An elevated railway lane forming.
  • School girls ascending a building's exterior staircase, with a male student in the foreground leaning against a railing.
  • Tokyo-3 in the mist.
  • A flock of crows aggregated on telephone pole wires. (Corresponds to a shot from Episode 18.) A streetlight attached to the pole turns on.
  • A space vehicle above Tabgha (misspelled "Tagbha") Base, apparently on the Moon's surface.
  • Buildings rising up from the ground.
  • People on a crosswalk over several train tracks.
  • Tokyo-3's array of mirror buildings shifting position.
  • A train emerging from a subterranean tunnel.

Several action shots follow:

  • Enigmatic shot of what seems to be an Angel, walking on the ocean. (See Angels.)
  • Eva-03 descending from a jump, seen from below. The shot ends with a super-closeup of the Eva's eye.
  • Scene set in orbit above Earth, showing multiple spacecraft facing off against something obscured behind a "multicellular" A.T. Field. Probably the bombardment of Sahaquiel with N2 depth charges only mentioned in the original show.
  • Closeup of a previously unseen Angel's face, unleashing a blast via eyes.
  • A row of tanks unleashing fire.
  • Eva-01 running through a city. (From Sahaquiel operation.)
  • Eva-05 in dark environs. Two of its legs fly past the camera as it spins around.
  • Missile silo.
  • Eva-02 holding up (and breaking through?) Sahaquiel's A.T. Field. At the end of the cut, it rapidly draws up its knee (as if mid-kick).
  • Zeruel, unleashing a cross-blast.
  • A ship being consumed by a giant spout of water from below.
  • Giant explosion between two hills in the distance, with a reddish dome and a large halo.
  • Red fluid flooding a town or city. (Possibly the dissolved body of an Angel.)
Shinji

It closes with more character shots:

  • Shinji seen from the side, with the red ocean behind him and a flooded settlement at the horizon. Wearing the polo shirt.
  • Mari inside some kind of cockpit, wearing her "05" plugsuit, rearing up and rapidly looking to one side. Her face is obscured by a giant helmet with "EVANGELION-05 PROVISIONAL" written across the red visor, and the plugsuit has two large green cables plugged into it somewhere off-screen.
  • Asuka sitting in front of an aquarium, picking up a small electronic device.
  • Gendo and Fuyutsuki standing near one another. A tree-lined coastline with normal (not red) water is visible beyond the window.
  • Kaworu, gazing towards the camera while the Earth pans rapidly behind him.
  • Toji and Kensuke chatting in the classroom. Shinji is standing nearby and looks away (at Rei?).
  • Kaji leaning back, smoking a cigarette. Possibly on a ship, talking to Shinji.
  • Misato hoisting herself off her car. Dusk.
  • Asuka laying on a futon. She rolls over to one side and looks at something.
  • Rei sitting alone at school.
  • Aerial shot of Shinji standing at his mother's grave, presumably watching Gendo fly away. He walks off-camera and 2.0's title comes onscreen, thus ending 2.0's theatrical trailer much the same as 1.0's ended.

Theatrical Trailer #2

Released to Japanese cinemas on April 25, 2009, and set to a bombastic choral/instrumental piece. This summary is currently based on a combination of reports from Japanese fans[3] and a very low-quality camera recording. Some cuts are currently missing.

  • A pristine blue ocean with coral and live fish.
  • A row of mirror-like panels extending horizontally across the screen and flipping, the sky reflected in them.
  • Basketball being shot through a hoop.
  • Gendo standing at his desk with the (?) case containing Adam, Fuyutsuki in background.
  • Toji in jogging suit, making a gesture of distaste at a notched stick.
  • A doll, with the word "Asuka" barely visible on it. (Looks like a hand puppet version of Kyoko's rag doll.)
  • Asuka stirring in her sleep. (Dim lighting.)
  • Shinji lying on his side.
  • Closeup of Rei, immersed in what looks like LCL, wearing some kind of choker.
  • Closeup of Eva-01's eye turning red. (i.e. after being activated on the dummy system?)
  • Eva-03 attacking Eva-01.
  • "Tunnel Angel" moving past burning wreckage.
  • Eva-05 thrusting its lance weapon forward.
  • "Clock Angel". (See Angels.)
  • Eva-03 landing. (After somersaulting into Eva-01.)
  • Eva-03's chest plate being thrown into a hillside.
  • The edge of "Tunnel Angel"'s tail flying towards the camera. (Same dark, reddish environment with rows of small lights as in the original "Tunnel Angel" cut.) (See Angels.)
  • Eva-03 slowly advancing.
  • Another piece of Eva-03's armor being flung to the ground.
  • Eva-02 rolled up, revolving forward rapidly in mid-air toward the camera.
  • Pallet rifle upright on the ground (after being dropped), slowly falling backwards.
  • Misato et al. in a strategic council room.
  • Shots of Shinji and Rei looking through a glass aquarium, Rei speaking.
  • Asuka in plugsuit, with Shinji (wearing regular clothes) falling backwards into the foreground.
  • Ritsuko slowly looking over her shoulder.
  • Kaji at the (?) melon patch, with a pink towel draped around his neck.
  • Shinji slowly standing up in the same location as Kaji. (Lake Ashi in background?)
  • Mari glancing over her shoulder, pushing a button on her cell phone.
  • Closeup of airbrone Eva-02's back with S-Type Equipment outfitted.
  • Eva-02's feet landing on some of device holding a "Thunder Spear" weapon, activating the release mechanism.
  • Closeup of Eva-01 flying backwards in the ground (after Eva-03's somersault attack).
  • Eva-02 falling on its back and immediately getting into a crouching position.
  • Vast blue sky, with huge "flying wing" aircraft and escorting fighters. Double-ended axe-like weapon dropped from flying wing.
  • Multiple-color scan of an entry plug.
  • Closeup of Eva-01's foot buckling and the heel digging into the ground. (Scene where it's trying to hold up Sahaquiel?)
  • Closeup of Eva-01 being thrown into the mountain road (by Eva-03).
  • Under-shot through a steel tower and power lines, with closely-packed aircraft filling the sky.
  • Eva-01 dashing towards the foreground (low angle shot), train line visible at bottom left.
  • Asuka and Shinji sleeping under the same blanket.
  • Rei with an expression of confusion/shock on her face, standing in front of a man (identity unknown; only his shoulder is visible).
  • Asuka in casual clothes, turning towards the camera with an irritated expression.
  • Shinji putting down cellphone.
  • Piloting shots of Mari (with visor) and Shinji.
  • Closeup of Gendo doing his "pose".
  • Shots of Misato and Ritsuko on the bridge, with red emergency lighting.
  • Piloting shots of Rei and Asuka.
  • Low-angle shot of Eva-02 falling out of the sky towards the camera, bracing a weapon, blade pointed downwards.
