Evangelion 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance (ヱヴァンゲリヲン新劇場版:破) is the second film in the Rebuild of Evangelion movie series.  It premiered in Japan on June 27, 2009. The film was released to Japanese DVD and BD as Evangelion 2.22 with new scenes and dozens of modified cuts.

The movie will introduce Asuka Langley Shikinami (formerly "Soryu", and now with the rank of Captain), Ryoji Kaji, and the new character Mari Illustrious Makinami, along with Eva-02, Eva-03, Eva-05, and Eva-06. A combination of familiar (to NGE veterans) and newly-designed Angels will appear over the course of the film. New locations (such as Bethany Base and Tabgha Base) will also feature.

Evangelion 2.0 departs from the original much more extensively than 1.0, with a greater emphasis on new material. The first half of the film adapts "Action Arc" episodes 08 through 12. The second half adapts the primary conflicts of 18, and 19, while incorporating material up through 23.

Eva 2.0 will depart from the original much more extensively than 1.0, with a greater emphasis on new material, although little is known about the plot at this time. Elements from several TV episodes seem to be present in some form, namely Episodes 08, 09, 12, 15, 17, 18, and 19.

Yuko Miyamura and Koichi Yamadera are both confirmed to reprise their roles as Asuka and Kaji, respectively, and Maaya Sakamoto is joining the cast to play Mari. Mugihito has also been listed on the cast as specifically playing "Keel Lorenz" (he only appeared as the "SOUND ONLY" Seele-01 monolith in the first film).

Kaji takes Shinji, Asuka, Rei, Toji, Kensuke and Pen-Pen to a maritime preservation zone where the last marine animals are kept alive and the red ocean water is purified to make it habitable. Rei, alone with Shinji, compares her existence to that of fish in a tank, with a miffed Asuka seeing them and then playing a videogame in a corner. Shinji has prepared a box lunch for everyone, but Rei declines to eat until Shinji offers her some Miso soup, which she finds delicious.
+
The Eighth Angel appears. Identified as a living bomb that will drop on Tokyo-3, Misato plans to intercept it with the Evas, despite Ritsuko's objections to the practicality of the plan. The Eva units rush to the impact zone and catch it with the use of their A.T. Fields. After the Angel is destroyed, Gendo praises his son via a voice only communication.

 +
That night, Asuka is unable to sleep because of her inability to face the 8th Angel alone. She enters Shinji's room and lays behind him. Asuka decides they should refer to each other by their first names and asks why he pilots the Eva. Shinji replies that he isn't sure, but is happy that his father praised him - indicating that this might be the reason.

While Rei and Gendo eat a meal together, she requests that she arrange a dinner party for Shinji and the others and that Gendo himself attends. Gendo agrees after being reminded of Yui. Soon afterwards, Mari arrives in Japan by parachute, landing on top of Shinji at his school's rooftop. She speaks in English on her phone about her landing point being diverted, then tells Shinji before leaving that he's interesting and she likes his smell of LCL.

 +
Meanwhile, Rei is learning how to cook in preparation for the dinner party, cutting several fingers in the process. Asuka also attempts  to learn how to cook, so that she may impress Shinji. Rei sends out invitations to the party to everyone, even Asuka, although Shinji has no idea that Rei invited Gendo.

Like in the anime series, Asuka comes to live to Misato apartment, filling it with her belongings and trashing Shinji's stuff. She criticizes the small Japanese houses and the unlocked doors until Misato comes saying that both Asuka and Shinji will live together.
+
Somewhere in the United States Eva-04 disappears along with the American Nerv base. Eva-03 is airlifted to Japan as a result. Nerv headquarters encloses Eva-02 because of the Vatican Treaty, which states no more than three active Eva units are allowed in the same country. Asuka, angered over the decision, runs into Rei in the elevator. Rei explains what it means to be an Eva pilot and Asuka tries to slap her in frustration. She notices Rei has more cuts from cooking than she does and asks Rei what Shinji means to her. A jealous Asuka storms out of the elevator.
Asuka also is scared when for the first time sees Pen-Pen in the bathroom, dashing to the main room nude. Cans and a straw covers the bare minimum of Asuka to the viewers, and when she realizes that is nude in front of Shinji, she gives him a flying kick. At night she plays with an eerie puppet saying that all will be all right alone because she is special.

Kaji brings Shinji, Asuka, Rei, Touji, Kensuke and Pen-Pen to the Maritimal Preservation Zone, that is a huge purifying plant where the last marine animals are kept alive (in the red sea there is no life). After a long sterilization process (shower, heat room, immersion in purifier liquid, cold room, immersion in purifier liquid, hot room...) they hang around acting more or less like in the aircraft carrier of the original series. Rei, alone with Shinji, comments that she is like the fishes in a tank, and Asuka sees them from a corner and began to play a video game.

Shinji prepared a obentou for everybody, but Rei can't eat it because she doesn't eat meat, and Shinji gives her miso soup instead, she tastes it and says that is delicious.

After that Shinji and Kaji talk about the past of Misato and the second impact. Several flashback images appears: the 2nd Impact is the sky turning red and a black hole appearing in the middle. Four light bodies with halos appears (the Adams), as well as several red Longinus spears. Gendou and Fuyutsuki are visiting the base in the moon. They see Kaworu outside the window sitting shirtless in one of Eva-06 fingers, and while Fuyutsuki says that a human outside is impossible, Kaworu turns (to Gendou?) and says "Welcome, father."

Sahaquiel appears. At the begginning is just a rotating multi-eyed ball, and the N2 doesn't harm it. Misato and the rest realize that is a living bomb that will drop at Tokyo-3, and makes the plan to intercept it with the Evas. Ritsuko argues about how foolish the plan is. Asuka is also not happy because she wanted to do it alone.

Sahaquiel unfolds himself and becomes a multicolored eye with big hands before the landing.

The Evas rush to the impact zone with the help of special buildings (ramps, jumping spots...) and Shinji is the first one to arrive.

01 stops it, but from the center appears an humanoid shape with a Gaghiel-like face and impales Eva-01 arms with drills.

Asuka tries to stab the core, but it begins to move, so she is unable to hit it until Ayanami appears and holds the core with her hands. The angel is destroyed and the enourmous amount of blood floods the city. Via a voice only communication, Gendou praises his son.
+
While having some drinks and dinner with Kaji, Misato asks him to tell her the details of Seele and the Human Instrumentality Project, though he only claims that he isn't sure. Misato broods about the pilots having to shoulder the burden of the Evas, and how testing for Eva-03 happens on the same day as Rei's dinner party. Eva-03 arrives and Asuka decides to be the test pilot to skip Rei's dinner party. During the testing Eva-03 is taken over by the Ninth Angel, setting off an explosion at Matsushiro. Bringing an end to Rei's arrangement.

At night, Asuka is unable to sleep beacause she can't do everything alone, and goes into Shinji's room. She asks him why he pilots the Eva and he respond that he doesn't know but he's happy when his father praise him. Asuka says that he's an idiot.
+
In Eva-01 Shinji is faced against Eva-03 alone, but refuses to fight for fear of harming the pilot, despite being choked. Due to Shinji's refusal to retaliate, Gendo orders the Dummy System to be activated, forcing shinji to watch in horror while his Eva-01 brutalises Eva-03 and its core. When he regains the controls, Shinji begins attacking Nerv HQ and threatening his father. Gendo, unmoven, orders the LCL pressure to be increased disabling Shinji inside the Evangelion. Asuka is shown to be alive, but in urgent care.
A lot of daily life begins here. Shinji makes daily obentou for Misato, Asuka and himself but one day was unable to do it and Asuka yells at him, making Touji joke that they seem a married couple, so Shinji and Asuka blush. The next day she also makes obentou for Ayanami, that surprized says thanks while a pissed Asuka is watching.

After a session in the LCL tube, Rei and Gendou goes to eat together. Rei wants to have a dinner with everyone and asks Gendou to come too. He looks at Rei and for a moment he sees Yui's face, so Gendou accepts.

Rei, learning how to cook, have several finger cuts. Asuka sees it and she tries cooking too. Rei sent out invitations to the party to everybody, even to Asuka.

Mari comes by parachute to Japan and drops over Shinji, that is in the roof of the school listening music. She talks by the phone in English saying that the landing point was diverted and before leave, says to Shinji that smells nice, like LCL.

Shinji, sitting near the vending machines, is looking to his music player that doesn't work after the clash with Mari. Kaji appears and approaches to Shinji's face as if he's going to kiss him, scaring Shinji. They go to the watermelon field and Kaji asks if he likes Misato. An ashamed Shinji says "yes, no... I mean..." and Kaji asks to protect Misato because with his current position he's unable to do it himself. The Eva-04 disappears along with the American Nerv base, and they decide to bring Eva-03 to Japan. They enclose Eva-02 in some kind of lava pit because Nerv is not alowed to have more than 3 Evas in the same base.
+
Upon awakening in his hospital room, Shinji is brought before Gendo for his attack on Nerv. Gendo concludes that his son needs to grow up, and he responds by quitting as a pilot. Misato attempts to convince Shinji to stay, revealing that Rei held the dinner party so that he and his father might grow closer, but Shinji resolves to leave regardless.
Asuka is very pissed for it, and meets with Rei in the elevator. After a brief silence, Rei begins to speak about what means to be an Eva pilot, and an angry Asuka tries to slap her. Rei interceps it with a hand full of strips, compared to the only 2 that Asuka have. Asuka stops and asks what she feels for Shinji, and Rei says that she doesn't know, but when she is with him she feels warm. An angry Asuka leaves, calling her an idiot.

Eva-03 arrives and Asuka is the test pilot.
+
While Shinji is leaving Tokyo-3 the arrival of the 10th Angel  is reported. At Nerv, Mari hijacks Eva-02 and launches into the Geofront, while on the Moon, Kaworu prepares his descent to Earth, standing atop the Mark-06. Confronting the Tenth Angel in Eva-02 Mari can not harm it. She inputs a secret code that causes the Eva to enter the "Beast Mode" state, but it proves futile as she is severely damaged by the Tenth. In Eva-00 Rei arrives with an N² Missile. Together the Eva units remove the Angel's AT Field, but Rei pushes Eva-02 away to safety before a the missile detonates.
While changing in the semitransparent testing plugsuit, she talks by phone with Misato, that seems to be in pretty good terms with since this Asuka is not interested in Kaji, so they are not rivals.

Inside the Entry Plug, all becomes red, then blue and Eva-03 is taken by the angel making a blue explotion.
+
Mari crash-lands into a shelter, that Shinji had taken refuge in, and together they witness Eva-00 being devoured by the Tenth Angel, who begins to match Eva-00's identification signal. After urging from Mari, Shinji rushes to Nerv and insists that Gendo allow him pilot Eva-01. In the Eva he manages to stop the Tenth Angel from destroying the bridge and triumphantly battles with the angel until the Eva runs out of power - losing an arm in the process. Becoming increasingly angered In the darkened entry plug, Shinji's eyes begin to glow red as he yells "Give me back Ayanami!" at which Eva-01 suddenly reactivates. The Eva blocks the Angel's attacks with a strong AT Field and regrows its missing arm. Eva-01 proceeds to slice the Tenth Angel in half with eye beams, opening up the core that Shinji then enters.
Shinji was in the middle of the way to go to Rei apartment for the party when receives the emergency call, as well as the black car of Gendou, that does an U-turn and Rei, that was cooking for the party, is interrupted by Nerv employees.

Bardiel battle is similar to the series, but this time only 01 is in the battle.
+

Shinji refuses to fight because Asuka is inside. Being choked, Shinji manages to hold Bardiel hands, but another couple of arms grows from the shoulders and continue his job. Gendou orders to activate the Dummy System. Inside the entry plug the image is jammed in red, Shinji arms are locked and some kind of monitor appears in front of Shinji face.

A berserker Eva-01 begins to tear Bardiel in a feral way, punching, bitting and shredding, and at the end bites the entry plug.

The scene cuts, and begans again with a crazied Shinji stomping on the top of Nerv pyramid until is taken down incresing the pressure of the LCL. Asuka is seen in a red chamber with pilars, with machines that resembles the ones used when Shinji was injured vs Ramiel with Ritsuko and Maya looking outside. Only Asuka's hair can be seen, the rest are tubes and lights.
+
Inside, Shinji sees Rei cowering. Reaching out his hand, she tells him that she can be replaced. Shinji denies Rei's claim and continues to enter the Tenth Angel, causing it to fuse with Eva-01, determined to rescue her. As Shinji embraces Rei they begin to dissolve, Shinji thanks Rei for her efforts of bringing him and his father together. Rei apologizes that she couldn't do anything, but Shinji says things are okay the way they are.
A dream scene of Shinji in a train begins. He talks with Rei and, after a while, with a younger self. They talk about how Shinji doesn't try to understand his father, and that the music player that he carries was a belonging of his father. When he awakes, is being handcuffed and brought in front of Gendou. Shinji doesn't want to pilot anymore and leaves Nerv.

In the apartment, Misato tries to convince to stay, but Shinji leaves. Around this moment, Rei finds the music player trashed in a bin and takes it.Zeruel attacks. With a single beam pretty much destroys Tokyo-3 and for a moment we see Kensuke, Hikari and Touji, the latter trying to cover Hikari.

At first is like a mummy shapped version of the old design, but when unfolded it reaveals tentacle-like things that can be united to form drills.

Mari puts a pink plugsuit and takes Eva-02, and attacks with regular weapons.
+

Because is unable to do any harm to it, she stands up inside the entry plug and begins the "Beast Mode"; several cilinder-things emerges from Eva's back and shoulders, Eva-02 becames berserker and Mari is grinding like a beast with glowing green eyes too. But Zeruel easily defeats her, cutting one arm and piercing the body.

Rei appears with a missile that is blocked by the AT-Field. For a moment, we see the music player inside the entry plug. An agonized Eva-02 crawls to her side and bites the field until it breaks. At the last moment, Zeruel blocks it's core with an odd fang-like shield. Rei yells "Pilot of 02, escape!" throws the body of Eva-02 away and all explodes.
+
The body of Tenth Angel, now a giant, red naked Rei, is fully fused with Eva-01's core. The sky turns red, the Eva forms a halo and a black hole appears; sucking the damaged Tokyo-3 into it. Misato and the rest of Nerv realize that this is the beginning of Third Impact.
An incredible trashed Eva-02 lands in Shinji shelter, and manages to take an unwilling Shinji outside.

He sees all the field burning, with a completely burnt 00 in the middle. Another Gaghiel-like face emerges from Zeruel and eats Eva-00 knees up, spits Eva-00 head and becomes a giant naked white girl with Zeruel face and the tentacles that resembles a wig.

In shock, Shinji yells that he wants to save Ayanami and goes to pilot Eva-01.

Meanwhile Gendou is trying to activate 01 with the Dummy System, but is rejected. While he is saying "Why you do this, Yui?", Shinji appears begging to pilot 01.

Like in the series, when Zeruel appears in front of Misato and the rest in the main bridge, 01 appears, loosing an arm in the process and splashing Gendou with blood.

Eva-01 drags Zeruel back to the surface with the lifter, and begins to attack until it runs out of power. Zeruel impales 01 and the black silhouette of Shinji spitting blood appears on screen. In a pitch black entry plug, the eyes of Shinji glows red and yells to give Ayanami back, and Eva-01 goes berserker

The missing arm is now a modified At-Field, the green sripes became orange and a halo appears.

Zeruel attacks but is easily bloked by 01's At-field. Eva-01 eyes sparks and Zeruel is cut in half.

01 slowly aproaches the half dead body of Zeruel, while Misato and the main bridge crew, Kaji and a wounded Mari looks in awe (and Gendou watching stoically).

Both 01 and Zeruel begins to float, and 01 makes a hole in Zeruel core trying to takes Ayanami back. Eventually he finds her crouching naked in the darkness. Rei is reluctant to go, but at the end she gives her hand to Shinji, that drags her to the now completely bright entry plug. They embrace, and Shinji says "Thank you" for her efforts to do a dinner party with Shinji and Gendou. Ayanami apologizes because was unable to do it at the end.

The body of Zeruel, now a completely red giant Ayanami (included the head) fuses with Eva-01. The sky turns red making a black hole in the middle and Misato and the rest realize that this is the beginning of the 3rd Impact.

Credit rolls.

A spear coming from the sky impales Eva-01, that remains motionless. Kaworu in Eva-06 descends in the scene of the previous movie preview. He says "Shinji, this time only you will find happiness".
+
After the credits, the Lance of Cassius impales Unit-01 from the sky, appearing to stop Third Impact as Unit-01's AT-arm disappears and the doors to the Chamber of Guf close. The completed Mark-06, with the same halo as the awakened Unit-01, is shown descending from the sky. From the cockpit, Kaworu announces "The promised time has come, Shinji Ikari. This time, I'll be sure to bring you happiness." .

Eva 2.0 skipped the DVD-only "X.0X" treatment of its predecessor and was released straight to a DVD & BD 2.22 version supplemented with new scenes and dozens of modified cuts. New scenes include Shinji meeting Kaji at a Tokyo-3 train terminal and Eva-03 being air-lifted out of the American base.

Misato announces the following for the Next Time Preview of Evangelion Q/Quickening: "Eva-01 is frozen with Shinji and Rei still trapped inside. The fortress city is abandoned. Nerv personnel are held in confinement. Eva-06 is dropped into Dogma. The quickening Eva-08 and its pilot. And finally, the children fated to meet are gathered at last. Where will this story of people wishing to live lead?" Along with a promise of more fan service next time. However, none of the scenes from the next time preview make it into the final cut of Evangelion 3.0 that was released.

In the pamphlet, there is the full transcription of the preview:

"Eva-01 frozen with Shinji and Rei traped inside. The fortress which is disposed. Nerv personal confined. Eva-06 dropped in Dogma. Quickening (fetal movement?) Eva-08 and his pilot. Children fated to meet gathered at last. Where does the story of people wishing to live leads?"

Angels
Based on the scant available information (namely poster key words and the trailers), the film appears to feature five Angels, including two that are original to the Rebuild continuity. In the potential order of appearance:

{| cellpadding="4" border="0"

|-

|

| Third Angel The Third Angel of the Rebuild continuity. It fights Eva-05 amidst a maze of underground tunnels and corridors in Bethany Base. Possesses a stylized "skull" face, exposed jaw muscles like Gaghiel, and a narrow body with what looks like a long, skeletal tail, and is capable of setting off explosions using its eye sockets.

|-

|

| Seventh(?) Angel:

Arrives over the ocean, and is fought in Eva-02's debut battle. It is extremely tall, with very long legs- scale is provided by a destroyed warship. The face resembles the hands of a clock, with a Sachiel-like face acting as the "first hand", and a red "second hand" (another face facing the opposite direction) behind this. Both are supported by a tall, thin "neck", with an octahedral structure enclosing the core.  When a "foot" touches the water, an A.T. Field-like projection spreads out and causes what appears to be instantaneous frosting.

The new Aerial Recon S-Type Equipment is used in battle to deal with the issue of the Angel's size.

|-

|

|Sahaquiel: The Angel Sahaquiel appears again. Its initial form is a black sphere in space with a multitude of eyes. Following an ineffectual N2 aerial depth charge attack (corresponding to the N2 bombing of Sahaquiel in Episode 12), Sahaquiel plunges down to Tokyo-3, changing form as it does so. All three Evas (Eva-01, Eva-02 and Eva-00) take part in the Sahaquiel-"catching" operation.

|-

|

| Bardiel: As in Episode 18, Eva-03 is possessed by Bardiel. Only Eva-01 is available to stop its advance, and is ultimately activated on the dummy system to destroy it. The glowing blue mass covering the top of the entry plug emerging from Eva-03's back as visible from the second trailer is confirmed to be part of the Bardiel growth.

|-

|

| Zeruel: The design of the face has been changed slightly, although the body has undergone significant modifications, sporting a "mummy-like" appearance. The battle against Zeruel results in the Angel's defeat by Eva-01, but the battle and its conclusion are otherwise vastly different from the battle in Episode 19.

It opens showing Mari's Eva-05 switching power supplies, and Eva-01 rearing up and roaring under the influence of the dummy system, with blood from Eva-03 (offscreen) flying into the air. Eva-05 is seen again, along with another scene of Eva-01 in the process of destroying Eva-03. Several scenes from the Sahaquiel-catching operation are seen, although the Angel itself is obscured in the trailer. Scenes of characters in conversation follow, at various locations including Yui's grave and the Misato's apartment. A spacecraft is seen heading for Tabgha base on the moon. More city and environmental shots are followed by the attacks of Zeruel as well as the maritime battle with the (as-yet-unnamed) Seventh Angel. More scenes of characters follow, the trailer ending with Shinji standing at Yui's grave watching Gendo to fly away before leaving.

Fans get their first glimpse of Mari in Eva-05, some Angel attacks, and several character shots. The trailer ends with an aerial shot of Shinji standing at his mother's grave, watching Gendo fly away.

Several character shots follow:

* Shinji wearing a polo shirt, hanging onto a railing and talking to someone (Kaji?). Probably on a ship.

* Misato, with a dusky sky in the background, smiling and talking.

* Asuka in plugsuit, standing on top of Eva-02 (?), with hands on hips. Followed by a closeup of Asuka talking with an intense look on her face. (Similar to when she tells Shinji in Episode 08, "Come with me.")

* Rei sitting in her dimly-lit apartment, looking at something in her hands.

* Gendo with VTOL in background. (Presumably being picked up from Yui's grave site.)

* A flustered-looking Ritsuko (apparently arguing with someone).

* Shinji in what seems to be Misato's storage room (i.e., after getting kicked out of his by Asuka), wearing SDAT earbuds, hoisting himself off the floor.

Several "environmental" shots follow, including:

* An elevated railway lane forming.

* School girls ascending a building's exterior staircase, with a male student in the foreground leaning against a railing.

* Tokyo-3 in the mist.

* A flock of crows aggregated on telephone pole wires. (Corresponds to a shot from Episode 18.) A streetlight attached to the pole turns on.

* A space vehicle above Tabgha (misspelled "Tagbha") Base, apparently on the Moon's surface.

* Buildings rising up from the ground.

* People on a crosswalk over several train tracks.

* Tokyo-3's array of mirror buildings shifting position.

* A train emerging from a subterranean tunnel.

Several action shots follow:

* Enigmatic shot of what seems to be an Angel, walking on the ocean. (See Angels.)

* Eva-03 descending from a jump, seen from below. The shot ends with a super-closeup of the Eva's eye.

* Scene set in orbit above Earth, showing multiple spacecraft facing off against something obscured behind a "multicellular" A.T. Field. Probably the bombardment of Sahaquiel with N2 depth charges only mentioned in the original show.

* Closeup of a previously unseen Angel's face, unleashing a blast via eyes.

* A row of tanks unleashing fire.

* Eva-01 running through a city. (From Sahaquiel operation.)

* Eva-05 in dark environs. Two of its legs fly past the camera as it spins around.

* Missile silo.

* Eva-02 holding up (and breaking through?) Sahaquiel's A.T. Field. At the end of the cut, it rapidly draws up its knee (as if mid-kick).

* Zeruel, unleashing a cross-blast.

* A ship being consumed by a giant spout of water from below.

* Giant explosion between two hills in the distance, with a reddish dome and a large halo.

* Red fluid flooding a town or city. (Possibly the dissolved body of an Angel.)

It closes with more character shots:

* Shinji seen from the side, with the red ocean behind him and a flooded settlement at the horizon. Wearing the polo shirt.

* Mari inside some kind of cockpit, wearing her "05" plugsuit, rearing up and rapidly looking to one side. Her face is obscured by a giant helmet with "EVANGELION-05 PROVISIONAL" written across the red visor, and the plugsuit has two large green cables plugged into it somewhere off-screen.

* Asuka sitting in front of an aquarium, picking up a small electronic device.

* Gendo and Fuyutsuki standing near one another. A tree-lined coastline with normal (not red) water is visible beyond the window.

* Kaworu, gazing towards the camera while the Earth pans rapidly behind him.

* Toji and Kensuke chatting in the classroom. Shinji is standing nearby and looks away (at Rei?).

* Kaji leaning back, smoking a cigarette. Possibly on a ship, talking to Shinji.

* Misato hoisting herself off her car. Dusk.

* Asuka laying on a futon. She rolls over to one side and looks at something.

* Rei sitting alone at school.

* Aerial shot of Shinji standing at his mother's grave, presumably watching Gendo fly away. He walks off-camera and 2.0's title comes onscreen, thus ending 2.0's theatrical trailer much the same as 1.0's ended.

* Asuka stirring in her sleep. (Dim lighting.)

* Shinji lying on his side, looking at someone and smiling.

* Closeup of Rei, immersed in what looks like LCL, wearing some kind of choker.

Shots of Evas and Angels:

* Shots of Shinji and Rei looking through a glass aquarium, with Rei speaking.

* Asuka in plugsuit, with Shinji (wearing regular clothes) falling backwards into the foreground.

* Ritsuko slowly looking over her shoulder. Sitting in front of a computer, with a stethoscope around her neck.

* Kaji at the melon patch (?), with a pink towel draped around his neck.

* Shinji slowly getting to his feet, after looking at Kaji's melons? Underground lake in background.

More character shots:

* Two people (probably Asuka and Shinji; can only see them from the legs down) sharing the same futon. The one in striped panties is lying on top of the sheets.

* Rei with an expression of confusion or shock on her face, standing in front of a man (wearing black, but identify can't be confirmed; only his shoulder is visible). There's smoke or vapor rising off something the man is holding (also not visible).

* Asuka in casual clothes, turning towards the camera with an irritated expression.

* Shinji in the dark storage room, putting down his cellphone.

* Piloting shots of Mari (with visor) and Shinji.

* Closeup of Gendo doing his "pose".

* Shots of Misato and Ritsuko on the bridge, with red emergency lighting.

Evangelion 2.0 poster.jpg

Evangelion 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance (ヱヴァンゲリヲン新劇場版:破) is the second film in the Rebuild of Evangelion movie series. It premiered in Japan on June 27, 2009. The film was released to Japanese DVD and BD as Evangelion 2.22 with new scenes and dozens of modified cuts.

The movie introduces Asuka Shikinami Langley, Ryoji Kaji, and the new character Mari Illustrious Makinami. A combination of familiar and newly-designed Angels appeared over the course of the film, with new locations Bethany Base and Tabgha Base.

Evangelion 2.0 departs from the original much more extensively than 1.0, with a greater emphasis on new material. The first half of the film adapts "Action Arc" episodes 08 through 12. The second half adapts the primary conflicts of 18, and 19, while incorporating material up through 23.

Plot

Mari piloting during the Third Angel battle.

The movie opens in Bethany Base, a joint U.S./Russian Nerv base, where Mari is introduced in Evangelion Unit-05 fighting the Third Angel as it tries to escape. After a fierce battle, Mari is forced to eject and self-destruct the Eva to defeat the Angel. Kaji, who had been in communication with Mari during the fight, is then seen leaving the base via aircraft.

In a graveyard, for those lost during Second Impact, Shinji and Gendo have a conversation infront of Yui's empty grave; something which Shinji expresses his appreciation for. Misato takes Shinji home in the car, and en route they witness a battle between warships and the Seventh Angel. As Misato orders Nerv's Evas to intercept the Angel, Eva-02 arrives and proceeds to easily destroy it. The pilot of Eva-02, European Airforce Captain Asuka Langley Shikinami, introduces herself to Shinji, Toji and Kensuke, though she takes an immediate dislike to Rei Ayanami.

At Nerv Kaji hands a package to Gendo, the contents of which look like a human nervous system. Gendo calls it the "Key of Nebuchadnezzar," the Key to Human Instrumentality.

Asuka arrives at Misato's apartment believing herself to be replacing Shinji, but Misato reveals that both pilots will be living together as they are in need of learning teamwork. Something which neither child is pleased to discover. At night, Asuka is shown telling herself that she's special and she'll always be alone, while she plays with a doll.

Shinji and his classmates are taken to the maritime preservation zone where the last marine animals are kept alive and the red ocean water is purified in order to make it habitable once more. Kaji reveals to Shinji Misato's past and the events of Second Impact. Meanwhile, Gendo and Fuyutsuki visit Tabgha Base, located on the moon. They see a topless Kaworu sitting atop Eva Mark.06, who turns to Gendo and says "I'm pleased to meet you, father."[1]

The three pilots during a synch test.

Shinji's awkward first meeting with Mari.

The awakened Eva-01.

Eva-06 descends from the sky after lancing Eva-01.

This time, I'll be sure to bring you happiness." [2].

Evangelion 2.22

Eva 2.0 skipped the DVD-only "X.0X" treatment of its predecessor and was released straight to a DVD & BD 2.22 version supplemented with new scenes and dozens of modified cuts. New scenes include Shinji meeting Kaji at a Tokyo-3 train terminal and Eva-03 being air-lifted out of the American base.

Evangelion Q: Next Time Preview

Rei during the Q Preview.

Trailer Summaries

Preview

The "ADAMS" during the Second Impact flashback.
Mari looks at an array of glowing crosses (altered in the actual film).

A preview following the credits of Eva 1.0, structured the same as the "Next Episode Previews" in Neon Genesis Evangelion, complete with the same musical theme, voice-over by Misato, and promise of more fan service.

It opens with an introduction to the Evas scheduled to appear: The "provisional" Eva-05 on an underground rail, Eva-02 being air-dropped (outfitted with the new "S-type Equipment"), Eva-04's explosion, Eva-03 (infected by Bardiel), and Eva-06 descending from the Moon. The text "ADAMS" and a cryptic image of several ghostly, vaguely humanoid figures are flashed on the screen. The text "LILIN+?" then appears, followed by several shots of the "human" cast: Kaji and Gendo (as seen at the end of Episode 08); Misato slapping Ritsuko (recycled from Episode 16); Asuka, Rei, and Shinji (from the Zeruel battle in 19); and Kaworu (smiling against a dusky sky). Finally, the new character Mari is seen from behind, looking up at multiple giant glowing pink crucifixes, followed by a close-up of her face, a fleeing flock of birds reflected in her glasses.

Theatrical Trailer #1

Released in Japanese cinemas on March 14, 2009, set to "FLY ME TO THE MOON (IN OTHER WORDS) 2007 MIX" by Hikaru Utada (same as 1.0's theatrical trailer). Yahoo! Japan subsequently released a 27 second long "special version" edit, which rehashed some of the clips to a remix of the "Next Episode Preview" theme, along with hosting the original theatrical trailer[3].

Fans get their first glimpse of Mari in Eva-05, some Angel attacks, and several character shots. The trailer ends with an aerial shot of Shinji standing at his mother's grave, watching Gendo fly away. He walks off-camera and 2.0's title comes onscreen, thus ending 2.0's theatrical trailer much the same as 1.0's ended.

Theatrical Trailer #2

Released to Japanese cinemas on April 25, 2009, the Bandai Channel on May 8, 2009[4], and set to a bombastic choral/instrumental piece, "The Final Decision We All Must Take" by Shiro Sagisu. Various Angel battles and character shots are shown throughout the trailer.

DVD Promo

A minute-long DVD Promo was released in late March 2010 at the Tokyo Anime Fair.[5] The Official Evangelion website released the Promo online on April 14th, 2010.[6] The promo clip was set to a variation of Megumi Hayashibara's version of "Tsubasa o Kudasai" (entitled "Wings_HayashibaraNew_FullCD") while the images consisted of various spoiler scenes and examples of touch ups for 2.22 (including a new scene of Mari and Eva-02 jumping upside down as well as Eva-03 being air-lifted).
