Dummy System

Dummy Plugs are artificial pilots for Evangelion Units, built around an altered Entry Plug model which is red instead of white Containing the "personality" of either Rei Ayanami or Kaworu Nagisa (built around "blank" clones of each), the Dummy Plugs trick the Evangelions into thinking that a real pilot is actually synchronizing with it by mimicking the thought patterns of a pilot. Essentially, the Dummy Plug system also functions as an autopilot system: Nerv HQ does not specifically control the actions of an Eva Unit whose Dummy Plug has been activated. Eventually, all regular Evas are fitted with backup Dummy Plug systems (based on Rei) in addition to their normal pilot's Entry Plugs. The Mass Production Evangelions exclusively use the Dummy Plug system (based on Kaworu), removing the human element from their actions.
