seems not just to be limited to Shinji (16, 20, 26'), but other characters (ARM in 26') and Asuka in 22', as well. (Don't forget Toji in ep. 19.)

Also, possible connection between Asuka's "personal hell" in reality and what she went through during mindrape (e.g.: Speculation perhaps "hell" of Shinji not being hers, or the fact she's alone and hates it deep down despite her denial...) In the real world scene, Asuka sees Shinji standing and talking with Rei at a train station (unable to call Kaji since he's dead; looks angry/jealous, her anger seems to focus solely on Shinji (how dare you beat me you scum; I'm the best not you); Rei's more or less just a girl in the background... In mindrape scene, she's alone at a train station, sees Kaji and tries to get to him for help, but evil versions(??) of Asuka stop her; goes into blah blah blah Shinji sucks bigtime sequence. During the sequence when Asuka thinks about Shinji, we hear that Train Crossing sound-effect often heard during Shinji's Personal Hell Introspection.

26' Train stuff: Asuka calls Shinji on what he did, says wants to be his, Shinji wants kindness from her, weird sequence of Asuka/Rei/Misato saying they're kind to him and other stuff I don't quite get, Shinji freaks out (Instrumentality starting to get to him??) as the three women stare at him silently; cue strangle scene no.1. ALSO IN 26': During the KST "Breakup" lines Psychological sequence, we hear that Train Cross sound-effect yet again.

also get into if the "2nd person" of himself Shinji sees throughout is actually Shinji or possibly an Angel and or Shogoki.

various series episodes: Rei 3 asking Shinji why he does what he does and/or was it that he wants (people to praise him/not to leave him alone/to be kind to him; feels Eva is his only way of getting such praise)

Rei's Ghostly Appearances and Quantum Mechanics since it's connected with Rei 3 and trains and all...

Evangelion: Death is a 70 minute long recap of the first 24 episodes of the Neon Genesis Evangelion TV Series in the format of a string quartet, each focusing on one of four characters: Shinji, Asuka, Rei, and Kaworu. At the time of its release in theatres with Rebirth on March 15th, 1997, it featured extra footage that has never been seen that was later released as extra footage for episodes 21'-24'. There was a second theatrical version shown in theatres, without Rebirth, after the release of episodes 21'-24' that had much of the extra footage removed, this was called Death(true), aired January 2nd, 1998, on WoWoW (Japanese Satellite TV). Later, a second edit was made called Death(true)2 which was part of the final release of the movies in Revival of Evangelion, a theatrical re-release of the movies on March 7th, 1998.

Evangelion: Rebirth is the unfinished version of the first 25 minutes of Episode 25' (Air). It was released in the theatres along with Death on March 15th, 1997. The ending of Rebirth featured the song "Tamashii No Rufuran" by Yoko Takahashi. Unlike the U.S. release of Rebirth on DVD, which was an exact copy of the first 27 minutes of Episode 25', the Rebirth that was seen in Japanese theatres had a different Japanese dub, different BGM in certain places, has an extra cut not found in Episode 25' and some that are missing or had their order rearranged. AnimeNation Forums: "ANF". The popular anime-centered forum community of www.animenation.com. Over the years, its "Evangelion" subforum has been a great place to talk Evangelion and was, during its Golden Age (possibly starting Summer 2003), arguably the best NGE community on the Internet. It saw the birth of the Commentary Project, and the vast amount of discussion that has been generated there (or by the associated people, in general) acts as the heart and foundation of everything FGC.

The "good ol' days" appeared to be officially over towards the end of August 2005, when commentator thewayneiac began to mourn the forum's death. On the plus side, you can actually use curse words and mention things like Amazon and E-bay, and there is no thread culling!

Overview
Shinji achieved an unprecedented 400% synchronization ratio with Eva-01 during the battle with Zeruel, to horrible effect. With the Eva having ascended to the status of a living God and Shinji absorbed inside it, Ritsuko unsuccessfully attempts to recover him. In the meantime, Shinji makes contact with the resident soul of the Eva- his mother, Yui Ikari.

Synopsis
The Episode begins with Eva-01 feasting on the mangled corpse of the Angel Zeruel, consuming the Angel's S2 engine. The Instrumentality Committee is dismayed over the turn of events, the members complaining about the time and money lost because of all of Zeruel's destruction, and even worse, Eva-01 breaking free and acquiring God status. They consider Gendo Ikari as being responsible, and plan to give him a warning that such incidents cannot be tolerated.

Kaji is with Gendo and Fuyutsuki, talking about how Seele's reaction to the Eva, and Gendo's planned scenario. His last line is one of concern- he knows that Shinji is still trapped inside the Eva. Hyuga and Misato stand before a heavily damaged Eva-01, talking to each other. Misato is furious with Ritsuko, asking her what an Eva is, and even angrier when Ritsuko sounds like she is not taking responsibility for her work.

Inside the Eva, Shinji goes on a mental trip, talking to Rei in various locations- on an escalator, inside a train at dusk, and so on. He begins to question whether or not his father abandoned him or if he ran away, and why he piloted Eva in the first place. Images of Misato, Asuka and Rei appear to him, asking him to be one with them.

Ritsuko attempts the salvage operation in the meantime, but to no success. Shinji remains stuck inside the entry plug, refusing to come out. Finally, the entry plug bursts open and Shinji's plugsuit spills out, empty.

Shinji becomes aware of his mother inside the Eva, and hears a conversation between his father and her, talking about naming him after he was born. In the end, Shinji passes through an "Inner Universe" starfield and as the light turns from blue to red, passes out of the Evangelion. Misato is crying and holding Shinji's plugsuit outside, when there is a sudden splash and Shinji is seen lying on the floor, the Eva's core glowing.

Soon afterwards, Misato goes on a drive with Ritsuko. After a conversation about Eva, and listening to a background radio conversation of interesting importance to Shinji's situation, she drops off Ritsuko saying that she has a man to meet. Ritsuko takes a dim view of Misato going to sleep with Kaji straight after Shinji came out of the Eva, and Misato and Kaji discuss other matters while inside.

Notes
*The face of Evangelion Unit-01 is noticeably different from its appearance in Episode 02.
*What powers berserk Eva-01 is still a mystery, because Hyuga mentions that no physical, chemical, nuclear or biological processes have been detected inside. Eva-02 similarly goes berserk in Episode 25', so Eva-01 is not the only Eva that can move without a power source. Whether or not the soul alone generates the power necessary, or the Eva has other power-generating organs that can be activated in a state of extreme duress, is an open question.
*Shinji seems to be experiencing a "prelude" to instrumentality when the images of Misato, Asuka and Rei invite him to become one with them.

Evangelion long-distance weapons are used to (optimally) attack from afar.

Within the Show
Pallet Gun (or "Pallet Rifle") (パレットライフル): The standard-issue rifle used by Evangelion Units. It resembles a Steyr ACR combat rifle. This giant automatic rifle is proportionately sized to match the Evas, so an Eva can wield the rifle just as a human would use a conventional assault rifle.

It is not entirely clear why this weapon is called a "Pallet" Gun. Bonus materials and production notes never explain this choice of name, but do refer to it directly as such.

* 03: Eva-01 against Shamshel; ineffective.
* 09: Eva-01 against Israfel (ineffective), then as part of synchronized attack.
* 11: Eva-01 against Matarael; mortal blow.
* 18: Eva-00 and Eva-01 both sortied with; used by neither
* 19: Eva-02 against Zeruel, dual-wielded; ineffective.
* 23: Eva-01 sortied with; not used.

Handgun (ハンドガン): Resembles a Desert Eagle Mark XIX.
* 16: Eva-01 against Leliel; ineffective.

Sniper Rifle (スナイパーライフル): Eva-00's weapon of choice, modeled on the Accuracy International Arctic Warfare Magnum.
* 16: Eva-00 against Leliel; doesn't contact.
* 23: Eva-00 against Armisael; ineffective.

Bazooka (バズーカ)
* 18: Eva-02 sortied with; not used.

Hand Bazooka (ハンドバズーカ): Also called "Launcher Gun" (ランチャー銃).
* 19: Eva-02 against Zeruel, dual-wielded; ineffective.

Positron Rifle (???) Shoulder-mounted.
* 09: Eva-02 against Israfel; limited effect or ineffective.

Positron Rifle (20x, toroidal accelerator): Shoulder-mounted. Capable of firing rounds into low Earth-orbit, though the power of the shots diminishes to being ineffective at such a long range. Not a very mobile weapon, as relies on an external power cable to power its function. It still uses a finite amount of ammunition, about 8 rounds.
* 06: Seen but not used.
* 22: Eva-02 against Arael; doesn't contact.

Positron Sniper Rifle: A prototype, originally requisitioned from the JSSDF's R&D labs.
* 06: Eva-01 against Ramiel; mortal blow.

Positron Sniper Rifle (Modified, Lower Power?): Upgraded, modified, or Eva-specific version of the weapon used against Ramiel.
* 22: Eva-00 against Arael; ineffective due to range and power limitations.

In Other Media
Gatling Gun (ガトリングガン): Appears in Evangelion 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone. A massive Gatling Gun, used by Eva-01 against Shamshel. When it fires it drops a large amount of spent shell casings that destroy several vehicles on the ground.

Assault Rifle: Appears in Evangelion 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone. The same as the old pallet rifle, is brought up for use against Shamshel but not taken. Considering that it was never explained why the original gun was called a "pallet" rifle of all things, the production team probably just simplified it to "Assault Rifle".
Evangelions have various armaments at their disposal in their anti-Angel endeavors. However, the conventional weapons employed by Nerv are found to be less than effective against most of the Angels sortied against. These weapons come in two main varieties:

* Evangelion melee weapons
* Evangelion ranged weapons

There is also the Spear of Longinus and its polymorphic replicas, which are difficult to classify one way or the other.

An Eva acting of her own accord tends not to use weapons, since her body and A.T. Field are the only weapons she really needs.

God (神, kami) is a gratuitously abused term in the NGE universe, used excessively broadly and often to mean more than one thing. It's hard to define, as well, since kami is both a concept unique to Shintoism and the Japanese translation of the Western term "G/god", which is something wildly different.

*"Are humans something created by a god (kami-sama)? Are humans something created by humans?" - Rei, Episode 14
*"Eva-01's the living embodiment of a god now, that's no good! We have no intention of reifying a god!" - Seele, Episode 21
*"The Path to God, which no one has ever achieved..." - Gendo, Episode 21
*"Humans found a god (kami-sama), and, in their joy, tried to make her theirs." - Ritsuko, Episode 23
*"Gendo Ikari wants to attain the power of a god" - Seele, Episode 24'
*"...join humans, G/god(s), and all living things in "death"" - Seele, Episode 25'
*"Eva-01 has become something kinda like a god" - Fuyutsuki, Episode 26'

It also shows up in the Classified Information a ludicrous number of times. Its usages can be noted here, as well.

In Episode 16, Shinji is pulled down into the "shadow" of the Angel Leliel. Ritsuko describes this space as a Dirac Sea (ディラックの海).

:Ritsuko: "It's six hundred eighty meters in diameter with a thickness of three nanometers. The ultra-thin space is supported by an inwardly-directed AT Field. The inside is an imaginary space, called a Sea of Dirac. I think it's probably connected to another universe."

Essentially it is a pocket-dimension of sorts, from which it is impossible to escape.

Notes
*"Dirac Sea" is a real scientific term (though it was not fully explained on-screen). It is a theoretical model of the vacuum as an infinite sea of particles possessing negative energy, that was invented by the British physicist Paul Dirac in 1930.

The End of Evangelion (新世紀エヴァンゲリオン劇場版 THE END OF EVANGELION, Shin seiki Evangelion Gekijō-ban: The End of Evangelion) is a 1997 anime movie by Hideaki Anno, created as an alternate ending to the series Neon Genesis Evangelion.

It is meant to either replace or complement the original ending in Episode 25 and Episode 26 of the original series (there is some debate on just exactly how the two endings fit together).

Overview
With the defeat of the final Angel, Gendo Ikari turns on the Seele organization, each of them wanting to initiate Third Impact under their own control. Through Seele's control of the United Nations, it orders a massive leave-no-survivors assault on Tokyo-3 by the JSSDF. Asuka, piloting Eva Unit 02, is able to repulse the JSSDF, motivating Seele to deploy the nine Mass Production model Evangelions against Eva 02. After a titanic battle, Eva 02 is destroyed, killing Asuka. Meanwhile, Misato fights her way through the JSSDF's invasion of Nerv HQ to bring Shinji to Eva Unit 01. Rei merges with Adam and then Lilith, rejecting Gendo, and instigates Third Impact and Instrumentality using Eva 01, the Mass Production Evangelions, and the Spear of Longinus. After examining his life's meaning with Rei/Lilith, Shinji decides to reject Instrumentality, and return to the world even though that means being hurt. Some time later, Shinji wakes up on the beach of the Sea of LCL formed by Instrumentality, and finds Asuka alive next to him.
Notes
It is a commonly held belief that Hideaki Anno created End of Evangelion as a form of revenge against Evangelion fans unhappy with the existing ending to the TV series. In reality, the End of Evangelion is closer to the original concept for the series ending, which was changed due to budget and censorship issuesfact. It's also a commonly held belief that the Death threats flashed on screen in End of Evangelion were for the ending of the TV series, when in fact, the Death threats shown on screen at least, were in regards to Evangelion Death And Rebirth's ending. Most of these 'death threats' were, in fact, letters of praise and encouragement. Only 2 can really be considered 'death threats', while only 1 can really even be considered 'hate mail'.

The Marduk Institute (マルドゥック機関, MARUDUKKU Kikan) is, supposedly, the secret selection committee that screens the global population for 14 year old children who would make suitable Evangelion pilots. In Episode 04 Gendo tells Ritsuko that "According to the Marduk Institute's report, the 4th Children has yet to be found."

However, Ryoji Kaji's investigations in Episode 15 reveal that the Marduk Institute does not really exist; it is a dummy organization composed of 108 front companies, and Eva pilots are actually hand-picked by Nerv. All potential Eva pilots are then transfered to Class 2-A in Tokyo-3, to keep them on-hand should Nerv require them.

It's not entirely clear how Children are really picked, i.e. does Ritsuko pick them all by herself? Do Gendo and Ritsuko select them together? Does Gendo select them entirely on his own without consultation from Ritsuko? All of the potential Eva pilots are grouped together in Class 2-A by Nerv to keep them safe and on-hand. Moreover, in this scene Gendo and Ritsuko are just talking to each other (albeit with Rei standing with them). Gendo and Ritsuko are fully aware of the true nature of selecting Eva pilots, thus when essentially in "private" (with only Rei to hear them) it should probably be assumed that they were saying the truth. Thus, has the "Fourth Children" actually not been "determined" yet? Eventually, Toji Suzuhara is "selected" as the Fourth Child in Episode 17, but his "selection" is shown to be a sham. The overall question is: did Gendo and Ritsuko honestly not know which of Shinji's classmates would be selected as the next pilot this early in the series, or was he selected to be the Fourth Children years before the events of the series begin? Shinji synchronizes with Eva 01 because his mother Yui's soul is in it, and Asuka synchronizes with Eva 02 because her mother Kyoko's soul is in it. It takes years to build Evangelion Units. At what point is an Evangelion Unit imbued with a human soul? Do they select the most suitable pilot and then use the corresponding soul, or vice-versa?

Notes
*The "Marduk Institute" is really 108 front companies: this might be yet another religious reference, as there are 108 sins in Tibetan Buddhism, and 108 beads on a Hindu or Buddhist rosary, with a separate head bead.
**In Buddhism, 108 is also the number of steps or earthly temptations that a man must overcome to attain Nirvana.
**In Hinduism, several powerful Gods and Goddesses have 108 names. In this case, all 108 different names are merely aliases for a single organization: Nerv itself. The Babylonian God Marduk, after whom the organization is named, had fifty names himself.
*In Babylonian Mythology, Marduk was the God who created humans to bear the burdens of life so that the Gods could be at leisure.
Actually, I think I could make a more expansive "Cleanup2" and "Cleanup3". Deconstruction becomes cleanup2...simpler to remember. And spgerror becomes cleanup3. Cleanup2 is for articles that aren't a total mess but are larger than they need to be, and cleanup3 is for ones that have spelling and grammar erros and minor violations of convention.
::You removed a great deal of relevant data from several articles, but on the "Evangelions" article itself....that was never a finished article by any stretch. That was one of the "work in progress" articles and was never finished so it can't be said to have been "filler", etc. Ursus the problem is not "information that serves little or no value", it is "judging what information serves no value and should be deleted"...and you're picking to remove things that are actually not redundant and should be contained within it.
You know, I never noticed before that Zeruel's face got impaled on Eva 01's horn; the shot was kind of dark. Then again, it's not bleeding or anything, so maybe there's a big hollow cavity inside the face plate and it didn't really do a lot of damage (it's not like we see eyes or anything)...--V 09:09, 4 August 2007 (EDT)

:Eva Commentary took at look at the scene where Zeruel is sliced up by Shogoki- from the looks of it, something invisible shoots down the arm and even knocks the A.T.Field out of alignment before slicing through him.

:On an additional note, I have a bone to pick with the S2-core theory- Zer is sliced above the core, and Shogoki eats (Or at least bites) his head as well. I have to see it again, but I seriously think that the S2 isn't in the core after all...but that's for elsewhere.--UrsusArctos 10:11, 4 August 2007 (EDT)
On the "to do" list...Anyway, yes, the freezeframe shows that Zeruel's remaining arm is intact...well, all of it is off to one side, when "something else" is tearing up its main body. Of course, there's always the question of "did they just animate this sequence badly and not fix their mistake"? but I'll just drop that and trust what's on-screen. Yeah, the evidence is all there, change it back. --V 20:23, 4 August 2007 (EDT)

Sachi didn't take that many blasts to get through- it was Zer who was shooting all over the place. Even after the multiple shots, there still was one armor plate left(Aoba says that distinctly), and Sachiel actually was doing the same thing-shooting all over the place in the same sort of way. You can see Sachiel's X-blast penetrate into the Geofront itself, something that Zeruel actually doesn't do.

As an aside, I don't even think Hyuga is there in the second episode when Sachi and Zer are going against each other, or did he not realize that the Geofront Armor had been broken through? The fact that Sachiel can't fly except for a short distance must have slowed him down a bit when he was searching for an entry.

Sachiel's weapon is actually as nasty as Zeruel's...although Eva 01 seems to have used its A.T. Field to block that. The A.T.F. wasn't up in those confined spaces, or else even Zeruel's blasts might've been stopped.
Thumbnailing
@V: I intentionally didn't create a thumbnail of the "fists" production drawing. I'm fetching various screenies, etc., to illustrate various points highlighted in the writeup -- far too many to feasibly include thumbnails of, barring a spacious gallery or something. What are your thoughts? --Reichu 11:38, 13 August 2007 (EDT)
::Actually I envisioned the Angel and Eva pages being filled with lots of pics of Angels and Evas. Or underneath "Notes" and "Analysis" there could just be an "Images" section; but I wouldn't want to put them on a separate page. For now, though, until there are far too many images, inserting thumbnails is the best cure for the "wall of text" problem; jazzes up the article, etc. I'm in "cross that bridge when we get to it" mode. --V 11:41, 13 August 2007 (EDT)
:::"Lots" meaning "whenever they serve to illustrate a point", hopefully. In Zeruel's case, for instance, I'm going to fetch: "accordion arms"; Zeruel's arms at maximum observed length (after chopping off Nigouki's arms); Zeruel using his "hand" to grab Sho's head; the sinewy "neck"; four blasts at the same time; and, well, you get the idea...

:::In the absense of thumbnails in the immediate vicinity, I kind of like having image links directly following the points they're meant to illustrate. Reinforces the sense of purpose. --Reichu 11:50, 13 August 2007 (EDT)
::::We can fidget them around later; linking to them is fine for now. Of course, my whole view is "A guy from Weta Digital should be able to read this page and now even the tiniest detail about an Angel's design, so they damn well better get it right"--V 12:09, 13 August 2007 (EDT)

I originally uploaded the "long arms are looooooong" image specifically to provide a link after the "maximum observed length" statement. I implemented it a bit on the late side; the image was never intended to be a generic "Battle" pic. PUT THE LINK BACK! (breathes fire)

Also, a grammar lesson: When a complete sentence follows a colon, the first letter is capitalized. For whatever reason, you downsized the boldfaced "E" here...

"Zeruel possesses a protective lid capable of shielding the core when threatened, and it serves as a testament to Zeruel's incredibly tough constitution: Even when an N² bomb is detonated in direct contact with the (protected) core, not only is the red sphere left completely unscathed -- the rest of the body is, as well."

...while leaving similar instances alone. And when recorrected it, back it went to lowercase! Hey, what gives? --Reichu 20:56, 31 August 2007 (EDT)

::I just asked an English teacher I know over the phone if "When a complete sentence follows a colon, the first letter is capitalized" and she told me, in her professional capacity, that this never happens and the words coming after a colon are always lowercase.
::As for the images, it makes no sense to have the images only to not show them in the "Zeruel" article but link away from them through text links. Instead, the actual images should be in the article (the production sketches I want moved to the notes section if you think them unfit for the main article). Problem is that you can't have a ton of images all bunched together, so I tried to evenly spread them out through the article by showing some shots in the "battle" section, just to even the article out visually. --V 22:17, 31 August 2007 (EDT)

:::Regarding colons, I'm fairly certain this is an instance of variable usage, i.e., "it depends on who you ask". (This search result is "case in point".) My habits were largely set in place by my mom -- who had been a professional editor for a textbook company -- when she took the red pen to my school papers. And regarding English teachers, there are many who would vehemently oppose quotational habits that I believe both of us use, even though they might be perfectly acceptable in other circles. That said, I think my way of handling crap after colons looks nicer. ::p

:::The Radioactive Waste page demonstrates the horrors of including too many images. A very small handful in the article itself, but that's it. You need to be incredibly selective -- i.e., not thumbnailing every odd thing I upload -- otherwise you're just going to be creating a cluttered mess. --Reichu 23:23, 31 August 2007 (EDT)

Zeruel vs Sachiel
Although Hyuga is astounded when Zeruel destroys eighteen layers of armor with his first shot, Sachiel accomplished the same feat visibly needing fewer shots. In fact, one of Sachiel's "energy crucifixes" goes completely through the roof and explodes inside the Geofront itself. Since construction had almost been completed at that time, it is very likely that all twenty-two armor layers were in place, implying that Sachiel's weapon was actually the more powerful of the two (Although incapable of multiple shots and nearly harmless to the berserk Eva-01) --It takes a LONG time for Sachiel to finally break through the armor layers; it's what allows them to take so much time up with Shinji being whiny in episode 1. Zeruel is treated as NEAR-INSTANTLY slicing through almost all of the armor plates in a single shot. Zereul's energy blast is clearly stronger than Sachiel's. We need to hammer this out and come to a final form before we can keep editing this, otherwise it will drag out for a while--V 20:39, 23 August 2007 (EDT)

: Have you forgotten that Zeruel can fly, while Sachiel can only jump? Sachi was walking around looking for the hole he blasted when the Eva came up. And Zeruel takes enough time with his shooting for Shinji to get back into the Geofront as well. Sachiel came on the scene a little late, and his shooting caused enough of shakes that you knew when he was shooting, not to mention the one that exploded inside the Geofront.

:Not to mention that Sachiel actually does something Zeruel can't: he can shoot that blast horizontally (Although Eva-01 somehow doesn't feel a thing. I suppose the armor they fitted before Ramiel melted it was superior to the crap they put on later). Let's ask Reichu what she thinks of Sachi-kun...
--UrsusArctos 21:07, 23 August 2007 (EDT)

::Well...yeah; Sachiel was walking around trying to blast through a weak point, while Zeruel just started blasting away and easily got through. I think the armor it had before and after Ramiel is exactly the same. Sachiel's energy blast eventually couldn't hurt Eva 01 at all (even the skullbuster shot took a few tries) while Zeruel just blew its arm off.--V 21:21, 23 August 2007 (EDT)

:::Sachi's last explosion was the one that dropped the lights from the cieling and prompted the Eva to shield Shinji. In any case, why would he use a crucifix weapon at such close distance, unless he were to set the beam horizontal? Both Sachiel and Zeruel fire the shots from a distance- Sachi from a hilltop, Zer from the air. And from the size of the blasts, I doubt they just got lucky and hit a weakspot.

:::Oh, and correct me if I'm wrong; Hyuga didn't turn up until Episode 03, neither did Aoba. Neither of them would have been there to see Sachiel's blasting for themselves. And for Sachiel's blast having no effect: it seems to be the type of blast that matters. Sachiel, Israfel and Sahaquiel went off in pretty big bangs, but even Sahaquiel's death explosion didn't hurt the Evas (Eva-01 sustained minor damage trying to hold the Angel up before the other two Evas arrived). Shinji starts to cook as soon as Ramiel starts melting the armor, while Zeruel's blast, the one that actually blew off the armor, didn't hurt Shinji inside or cause visible damage to the entry plug. --UrsusArctos 21:35, 23 August 2007 (EDT)

::::We're not comparing them to Ramiel we're comparing Sachiel and Zeruel. Hyuga, Aoba, and Maya are physically in the command center they just don't talk alot. By all means they're intended to be there. --V 21:39, 23 August 2007 (EDT)

:::::My bad about Hyuga and Aoba. Stupid me...I was thinking of Maya in Episode 01! I brought Ramiel , Israfel and Sahaquiel in to prove a point about why Sachiel's cross-blast was ineffective. Like the mysterious method Longinus no Yari employs to go out to space and penetrate A.T. Fields, some attacks have less of an effect on an Eva or an Angel. It just doesn't mean they're less powerful.

:::::Now, if you don't understand my analogy with Longinus no Yari and why the Spear does things that an ordinary spear of that size cannot, I think we'll dump the whole stupid topic. --UrsusArctos 02:50, 24 August 2007 (EDT)

They make such a big point of actually having Hyuga, in the script, say "OMG it shot through almost the entire armor plating in a single shot!" that it seems Zeruel is presented as having more powerful energy blasts. Heck, it's daytime-dusk when Sachiel starts blasting into Tokyo-3 and its NIGHT by the time he punches through. It's not just trival comparison, because in the actual Zeruel page it's going to say "his energy beam is notably more powerful than all of the other Angels, including probably even Ramiel". Thus this feeling that Sachiel's was more powerful comes into direct conflict. Okay Reichu, how should the bullet point about this be written? I mean I'd have written something like: "Zeruel's energy blast is more powerful than any other...etc. etc.", as was originally in there. --V 13:18, 24 August 2007 (EDT)

::Well, how about... we just put down what Zeruel actually does (in terms of what we are told or can directly observe), and leave the "Which Angel would win in a fight?" stuff out of the encyclopedia? --Reichu 14:48, 24 August 2007 (EDT)
Zeruel's eyes
The two eyes hidden inside the deep "sockets" are, as with Zeruel's kin Sachiel and Israfel, employed for both vision and energy projection -- however, their capabilities in the latter area are considerably more potent.
Should we reword that? We can't say for sure where the crucifix blasts and energy beams come from. Sachiel's actual eyes were hidden somewhere inside his mask until he decided to go boom, and we never get to see Zer's eyes in those huge sockets. The first shot looks like it comes from Zeruel's mouth (Or it just might look that way because of the distance from which he's seen). There's no way we can conclusively say that Zeruel (or Sachiel or Israfel) are using their real eyes as weapons, or if they just aren't using the eye sockets as an aiming convenience for shooting exploding energized fragments of their own matter (A la Sahaquiel). Shooting four separate locations at once is wierd- either Zeruel can look four places at once, which I doubt (Since he moves his head inside the bridge), or he just uses it to conveniently aim both the energy beams and the crucifix explosions.
--UrsusArctos 22:37, 24 August 2007 (EDT)

:Since their eyes light up before they fire off energy blasts, the eyes are clearly being used in some manner. How is up for grabs, but "energy projection" sounds good to me. Zeruel provides a bit of a precedent here since we see energy quite literally shoot out of his eyes and do damage.

:The four cross-blasts Zeruel fired didn't rise all at once, but in succession.

:As for "mouth", not quite sure how you're coming to that conclusion... We're getting a frontal view from which Zeruel's eyes wouldn't be clearly visible, given the angle at which his head is titled. --Reichu 00:00, 25 August 2007 (EDT)
If Sachiel's yellow, bulging eyes had been visible outside those holes, and lit up while firing, I'd know for sure that he really was using his eyes as weaponry.
"[[the core's] not significantly bigger than Sachiel's or Shamshel's": Zeruel's core always struck me as being "XBOX HUEG", proportionately. ==Sadistic Zeruel==
Zeruel does appear to have a sadistic bent of some sort, because while most Angels just don't care about Lilin, Zer (Who is in the shaft that goes direct to Terminal Dogma) chooses to detour and blow up the bridge crew. Blasting away at the Tokyo-3 roof structure or Evas is nothing new, but he bashed in, looked about at all the little humans and prepared to blow them to kingdom come. That attack on Lilim isn't seen anywhere else, most Angels probably wouldn't care. While calling him a sadist in the encyclopedia wouldn't exactly be correct, we could say he has a pathological hatred for Lilim that other Angels do not display, and acts towards that end. --UrsusArctos 17:06, 9 December 2007 (PST)
:"sadistic" might be a little advanced for him but I'm using it as best-fit; it's "sadistic" in the same sense as when a cat chases a mouse, and then the mouse scratches the cat really painfully, and the cat then takes its time ripping the mouse apart once it catches it. That's not really a complex "emotion" but is present in animals, as opposed to some Angels which just fight long enough to advance. --V 17:14, 9 December 2007 (PST)
I'm looking for le mot juste and I'm thinking something like "Zeruel is the <<culmination/climax>> of Angels that focus on direct conventional combat" but that doesn't jive. I was going to ultimately go with "apex", possibly pinnacle (earlier I had used "paragon" but that really veers more towards "paradigm"). "Perfection"? :Ursus.....there is no such thing as "too big" if its actually saying something relevant. By that logic, the entire "Shinji Ikari" page could be argued to only really need to be a paragraph long. Why are you afraid of the article being long? Wasn't the entire point of having an "Evangelion encyclopedia guide" that "no one ever made a full guide to the series before, all we've got to go on are short blurbs, and wouldn't it be nice to have a thorough guide to the series for once?". If you are upset about the "wall of text" the obvious answer isn't "lets remove the text" but "insert subheaders and thumbnailed images to break up the flow of the text more". Case in point, if by your own admission you "have no idea what to cut out"....that's because there is nothing to cut out. I could see if you were arguing that "such and such a subsection is redundant" but each section of the article is saying something specific that no other part does. Are you simply scared of the wall of text? For months I've been holding up the Zeruel article as an example of the "perfect" article which all of the other ones should be aspiring to.

@V: I intentionally didn't create a thumbnail of the "fists" production drawing.

==Zeruel vs Sachiel==

==Zeruel's eyes==

Even if the whole eye socket lights up, there's no telling if his eyes are the only things in there? He might have eyes to see, and a seperate weapon to shoot. Or else he uses A.T. Field voodoo to refract light into his actual eyes, and uses the holes to shoot energy beams. If Sachiel's yellow, bulging eyes had been visible outside those holes, and lit up while firing, I'd know for sure that he really was using his eyes as weaponry. I'm not saying he isn't; I'm saying we can't say it for certainty. That is, unless Gainax has said outside the Anime that "Angels use their eyes to shoot zap beams" the way it confirmed that Lilith was the second Angel.--UrsusArctos 00:58, 25 August 2007 (EDT)
:The X-blasts are a little strange, since the eyes do this halation-thing and then a giant explosion tends to just magically appear a distance away. Alternatively, when Zeruel does the focused eye beam, we see the energy go directly from his eyes to the point of contact. Weird, huh?
Zeruel's Core
"[[the core's] not significantly bigger than Sachiel's or Shamshel's": Zeruel's core always struck me as being "XBOX HUEG", proportionately. This is evident enough by comparing its circumference to Sachiel's or Shamshel's (using the Evas as a reference point), and then you factor in volume. Do I need to compile a series of images in order to get my observation back in? <_< --Reichu 20:51, 30 August 2007 (EDT)
:::Yeah that brings up the question: Zeruel's arms are sharp enough to slice off Evangelion arms; why doesn't it simply slice through the core? Is the core "tougher" material? Or is it torturing Eva 01, on purpose, toying with it before the kill? I mean you'd think it could if it wanted to. Well we'll have to reword this battering-ram stuff though that does seem more fitting them spears.--V 22:14, 31 August 2007 (EDT)
::::Cores are actually pretty hard from the looks of things, but it looks like all cores are not the same strength. Sachiel's core cracked under a hammering from his own dismembered ribs and began to crack, Shamshel's took a while to go phut even after the knife had bored deep into it. I guess core strengths are like Evangelion sizes, the core can be hard or tough or brittle or however it appears as the situation demands. Zer's arms, no matter how many arms or heads or helmets they slice through, can't hurt that core. --UrsusArctos 07:24, 1 September 2007 (EDT)
:::I find myself leaning towards the idea that Zeruel was intentionally going for a "slow kill", myself. --Reichu 08:20, 1 September 2007 (EDT)
::::At the least, I think they've established that cores are tougher-than-average parts of both Angels and Evas; though it looks like Zeruel is PO'd that Eva 01 was actually starting to gain the upper hand against it (after it pwned Eva 02 and Eva 00), and was going for the "slow kill" as a result. --V 09:21, 1 September 2007 (EDT)
:::::Well, notice too that Zeruel was going for a kill (however slowly) in the first place; with the other two Evas, he didn't bother. Just disabled them and moved on.
Sadistic Zeruel
::Of course, this might be a subtle hint that by this point Adam is bonded to Gendo and not IN Terminal Dogma. --V 17:23, 9 December 2007 (PST)
:::I doubt it: Gendo wasn't in the room when Zer bashed in, remember? He was trying to start Eva-01! And he was about when Eva-01's arm got shot and he got splashed with thick, red blood...of course, neither of the combatants would have had time to notice that he was there. He'd have gone straight into the Eva cage if he'd been after Gendo.--UrsusArctos 17:34, 9 December 2007 (PST)
Zeruel is the...
Would be good, except implies that someone is actively designing the Angels......which extra-narrative, of course someone is, but not in the story...--V 20:42, 10 February 2008 (PST)
:Ursus.....there is no such thing as "too big" if its actually saying something relevant. By that logic, the entire "Shinji Ikari" page could be argued to only really need to be a paragraph long. Why are you afraid of the article being long? :::Possibly: they don't really say the exact reason Gehirn became Nerv other than that Seele reorganized Gehirn into Nerv at the same time that Naoko died. Ritsuko then says: "all that's left to do is power them up" From the first part we just knew they were recently completed, but Ritsuko's statement confirms that it was literally right before they were going to power up the entire system because the entire thing was finished. -->There are two possibilities: one, that Naoko's death prompted Seele to reorganize Gehirn. Two, that Naoko just happened to die the day before Gehirn was reorganized into Nerv; and that it was always planned that when Gehirn finished building the Tokyo-3 base, the organization would be transformed into its finished body, "Nerv". Well, we've already seen that the base was JUST finished. But really, do you think the death of just Naoko would prompt Seele to reorganize an entire massive globe-spanning paramilitary organization?
:::Like Zugz says, it would make no sense at all for Nerv to be made operational when things were still half-finished. Having your top scientist suddenly commit suicide would shake things up thoroughly, and Gendo had already been blasted before, being publicly accused of murdering his own wife. It's more likely that Nerv would have been organized not too far in future, but Naoko killing herself shook things up so badly that Keel had to do it at once. Check out my "Rebirth of Yui" fanfic for my take on it, if you like. Top scientist dies and everything changes the next day? :::Like Zugz says, it would make no sense at all for Nerv to be made operational when things were still half-finished. Having your top scientist suddenly commit suicide would shake things up thoroughly, and Gendo had already been blasted before, being publicly accused of murdering his own wife. It's more likely that Nerv would have been organized not too far in future, but Naoko killing herself shook things up so badly that Keel had to do it at once. Check out my "Rebirth of Yui" fanfic for my take on it, if you like. Top scientist dies and everything changes the next day? I doubt that's a coincidence, no matter what the newscaster says.--UrsusArctos 18:16, 27 January 2008 (PST)
::::That doesn't really make much sense. Simply Naoko dying isn't enough for the entire organization to require reshuffling: having their primary base finally finished after years of work is. "Half-finished"? er, the entire point is that they just finally actually "Finished" everything. You can't use a fanfic you yourself wrote to reenforce your point. --V 20:18, 27 January 2008 (PST)
Shopping list article
I've added everything I can think of to this article about Rei, but it's a right mess and reads like a huge shopping list. Someone with a better capacity in English will need to go through it and make everything flow better and add points I've missed.

The Profile bit especially is dodgy as I'm not sure what to put in there, a lot of it could go in the notes section I suppose. I don't know what to write in the End of Evangelion section either. I'll leave it to someone else to decide on where this article goes from here on in. --Zugzwang 08:54, 2 February 2008 (PST)

:One big part is adding factual information, the other big part is writing it together smoothly as a "writer" would for an encyclopedia: just think "What would I expect this to look like in a real (physical) encyclopedia?" and go from there. It's something of a skill you have to build over time. Reichu told me not to actively change content in articles for a while so I won't step in. If this is the most you can do fine. Please work on other things as well if you feel you've hit a block here. --V 15:28, 2 February 2008 (PST)
::Do we really need all this? I know summarizing the character's role in the story was one of my suggestions, but this seems overlong. Visitors to this site have seen the story; it's for us to get out the "finer" details and summarize main points. Incisivis 18:37, 4 February 2008 (PST)
:::Well yes Incisivis, but Zugzy really just started out on the wiki the other week and I don't want to discourage him; it's kind of practice for him. We can fix it up as we go, and I didn't want to just revert lots of stuff he wrote. Reichu told me not to directly intervene but support/encourage through suggestion: I need to "teach a man to fish" on here. Please do whatever you think best. --V 19:46, 4 February 2008 (PST)
Rei and Fandom
I'm not touching this one way or the other, but this sounds kind of slanted...

""Rei's stoic personality, submissive nature and delicate appearance has lead to her being one of the most popular characters in Evangelion fandom. Often overlooked by the fandom however is Rei's aggression during the series, her wish to die, and her lack of concern for her own well-being: all of which conflicts with many in the fandom's view that Rei is merely a robot who would be subservient to their desires."

I don't know if Rei can be said to be the "most popular" in fandom, or to go on to say it is due to her personality "submissiveness" and...."delicate appearance". This needs work, though I'm not sure what to say. Why does Rei wish to die? (I acknowledge she said this I mean I am not sure why); when was Rei particularly aggressive? We've still got the "shopping list" problem...--V 17:45, 3 March 2008 (PST)

Rei and the Moon
I suggest moving it to an article of its own, with a note saying, "Rei is frequently seen with the moon as a motif. For more details, see the article." That prevents notes from being cluttered up.--UrsusArctos 17:32, 8 February 2008 (PST)
Welcome
Welcome; to get you started on how to use mediawiki, please read this one-stop tutorial which I wrote up: The NGE Fan-Geeks Project:Boot Camp for Newbies, which contains basically everything you'll need to know. Btw, a convention we use is that "Nerv" is always spelled "Nerv" lowercase, never with full-capitals. It was decided that that was just a translation mistake, i.e. sometimes even "Adam" and "Second Impact" are written all-caps. Check out the Notes section of the "Nerv" article where this is explained along with a screenshot demonstrating that within the series itself, they actually alternate between the two and do indeed spell "Nerv" lowercase at times. By extension, its also spelled "Seele" and "Gehirn", because those aren't acronyms either. Good luck, as as me if you need help. --V 11:39, 10 February 2008 (PST)
:I see you've found the "Wanted Pages" thing. That doesn't mean "pages we want or have requested"; it more literally means "links have been created leading to articles with this title, but they don't actually exist". That is, a functional link to a real article, i.e. "Shinji Ikari" appears in blue. But a link created to the non-existant "Shinji Useless Whiny Geek Ikari" would appear as a red link; this shows the link is "broken" (doesn't lead anywhere). That said, just because someone created a link to a page doesn't mean it should exist. That is, back in the day "Ritsuko Akagi" didn't exist as an article. It appeared as a red link. So I wrote an article, then it was there. But "Shinji Useless Whiny Geek Ikari" should never exist in the first place, someone just made a link to a non-existent article, if you follow me. --->Do not use the "Special pages" lists as a guide for what should be worked on they really aren't a guage of anything. Check out what is being worked on in "recent changes" (usually the best way to see "what's going on") or just browse through existing articles and expand as you see fit. It's not so much a process of creating new articles totally from scratch as it is incrementally, gradually improvising upon existing stuff, in a snowball effect. --V 11:45, 10 February 2008 (PST)
::...what is it that you're trying to fix? (I just fixed the Manga template image display if thats what you meant). --V 07:12, 11 February 2008 (PST)

:::Yup, and thanks for that, but how did you remove it..? --Bee-Zerk, 17:14 12 February 2008 (AEST)
::::It was displaying wrong because the template box was written wrong; you don't really have to worry about templates they're a high-end function basically handled through lots of tinkering. The "sound only" image automatically displays when there's nothing in the "image" category. Etc. --V 12:50, 12 February 2008 (PST)

Yes, they're pretty complex but what I usually do is copy another page's template (manga template, for example) and paste it on the edited page. I then edit it so it would be relevant to the topic. So I won't have to do the template from "scratch". --Bee-Zerk 17:10 13 February 2008 (AEST)
The Warship Pages
I removed the part about Russian and American carriers having different takeoff systems because the page is about the real carrier and not the one seen in NGE. "Warships of Neon Genesis Evangelion" and "Warships of the Pacific Fleet" are meant to be purely factual, so please keep all NGE information in the "Over the Rainbow" page, so no one gets confused. ===Stage 1: Angel Attack===

The manga opens with a monologue from Shinji, describing his mental state.

An alarm sounds, and Tokyo-3 is attacked by a monster. Misato Katsuragi arrives to pick up Shinji, who explains the situation; while the monster, the Angel Sachiel, is held off by a robot, Eva-01, piloted by Rei. Misato takes Shinji to Nerv HQ.

Stage 2: Reunion
Misato escorts Shinji through Nerv HQ, meeting Ritsuko along the way. They take him to the Cage, where Shinji comes face to face with Eva-01, as well as his father, Gendo Ikari. Gendo demands that Shinji pilot Eva-01, but Shinji refuses. Gendo has Rei brought to the Cage, to pilot the Evangelion instead, but before she can pilot it, the Angel attacks the HQ.

Stage 3: Unit-01, Lift Off
After seeing Rei's condition, Shinji agrees to pilot Eva-01. He is put inside the Entry Plug, and after some thinking, he is launched into battle against the Angel.

Stage 4: Silence...
Shinji attempts to battle the Angel, however he is easily defeated, and the Eva is damaged. The Eva goes silent, and Nerv is unable to eject the Entry Plug.

Stage 5: What Was Seen In The Well Of Light
Shinji has a vision of a woman reaching out to him, to embrace him, however the woman transforms into a grotesque creature as it approaches, and Shinji realizes that he doesn't want to die. At the same time, the Eva reactivates on its own, and goes berserk, defeating the Angel with ease.

Stage 6: I...Cry...
While unconscious, Shinji dreams of the grotesque creature chasing after him. He wakes up to find himself in a hospital. The scene switches to the Committee, where the members scold Gendo for the damages caused to Eva-01. Chairman Keel reminds him that the Instrumentality Project is the most important thing. Shinji wanders around the hospital, seeing Rei again. Misato decides to take care of Shinji, and becomes his legal guardian. She takes him to a viewpoint, where they look over Tokyo-3. Misato praises Shinji, who cries, saying that he wished his father would do the same.

Notes
*Even at this point, the manga already began to diverge from the anime.

Berserk (暴走, bousou) is a state an Evangelion can enter into in which she has gone beyond Nerv's ability to control her, entering into a savage battle-frenzy in which the Eva's strength and ability levels drastically increase. Those Evangelions with jaws bolted shut with force them open and bellow wildly during berserker mode, and show savage, animalistic tendencies in their movement and behavior.

"Berserker mode" operates in defiance of the current level of human scientific knowledge, and Dr. Ritsuko Akagi is aghast when Eva-01 goes berserk in Episode 16 with its internal batteries completely drained. In Episode 20 it is revealed that no known power source could be detected during the incidents (the second in Episode 19) when the batteries were drained.

During these incidents, the Eva's resident soul appears to bypass restraint mechanisms and wield her own body, although it's arguable how much "conscious control" the soul has over the Eva's actions. (The discrepancy between the behavior of Yui Ikari — prior to her "death" — and her Evangelion incarnation is often cited to this effect.)

Nerv is very aware of the danger an out-of-control Evangelion poses and is extremely concerned about keeping the Evas bound and restrained at all times. No attempts at artificially initiating a true berserker mode have ever been made, although the use of the Dummy Plug in Episode 18 results in a seemingly similar state of greatly increased strength and savagery. Several incidents of increased strength, savagery, or battle rage have been displayed by Evangelions, in addition to the "true", unpowered berserker mode.

Eva-00 has two incidents (in Episode 05 and Episode 14), both occurring when a pilot attempts to synchronize with her. During her activation test with Rei Ayanami, the Entry Plug is auto-ejected (apparently by the Eva herself) and Eva-00 continues to move undeterred until her power runs out. The second incident, involving Shinji Ikari, is extremely similar, except the Eva rejects the auto-eject signal. In both cases, the Eva shut down after she ran out of internal power, and did not restart, falling short of going "truly" berserk.

Eva-01 is the most notorious "berserker". Her abilities to move both independently and without power are effectively established before her initial activation, when she moves her arm to shield Shinji from falling lights (in spite of being loaded with a Termination Signal Plug). Not long after, she goes out of control during her first sortie, against Sachiel, exhibiting a bestial and uncompromising "battle rage" that doesn't stop until the Angel is down. Similar behavior occurs when Eva-01 brings about Leliel's gruesome destruction, and, later, mauls and devours Zeruel, although, unlike the incident with Sachiel, these both occur when her umbilical cable is disconnected and internal batteries fully drained, thus classifying as "true" berserker mode. Shinji is not involved in any of the berserk incidents, being blacked out in the first two and dissolving into LCL in the third. In Episode 25', Eva-01 moves independently once more, setting off a crucifix-shaped explosion and growing "wings of light". From this point forward, Eva-01 seems to be in complete control of herself.

Eva-02 sets off a crucifix-shaped explosion and goes into a battle rage in Episode 25', performing incredible acrobatic feats and casting an offensive A.T. Field against attacking JSSDF units. After losing all battery power (the umbilical cable was destroyed by the JSSDF) and being ravaged by the Mass Production Evas, the Eva goes berserk and moves without any power supply, moments before its destruction. Eva-02's "true" berserk mode is different from those exhibited by Eva-01 and Eva-00 previously because the pilot, Asuka appears to be in control of the Eva throughout and seemingly wills it into going berserk, having fully understood that the soul of her mother, Kyoko is inside. (It is worth noting that Shinji reached an impossible 400 percent synch ratio in the battle against Zeruel, at which point Eva-01 went berserk)

Eva-03 was infected by the Angel Bardiel during activation and initially behaved very much like Eva-01 in her first berserk incident, breaking open its jaws and bellowing, although this appears to have been the work of the Angel itself and not the resident soul. Despite being heavily mutated by the Angel, Eva-03 was ripped apart by a Dummy Plug controlled Eva-01, so the Angel appears to have been unable to harness the Eva's latent power and strength.

Notes
*Bousou literally means "out of control". "Berserk(er)", however, is the official English rendition, as indicated by the document Shiro Tokita displays in Episode 07.
*When controlled by the Dummy Plug system in Episode 18, Eva-01's behavior is indistinguishable from her true "berserker mode".
Ritsuko met Misato Katsuragi in college at Tokyo-2, as well as Misato's boyfriend Ryoji Kaji. After graduating college, Ritsuko joined Gehirn, and worked directly under her mother Naoko at the then-unfinished Tokyo-3. In many ways, Ritsuko is living in her mother's shadow.
In the present, Ritsuko first appears to have a good friendship with Misato, occasionally teasing her about her smaller shortcomings. Yet Ritsuko also avoids speaker about the personal and emotional aspects of her life, and under stress the two women grow farther apart instead of confiding in each other, due to some ethical differences and Ritsuko knowing more about what is going on but refusing to share this information with Misato.

Ritsuko was secretly involved in a sexual relationship with Gendo Ikari, who had first been with her mother. In addition to "sharing" the same man, the two Akagis both manifested destructive behaviour towards the figure of Rei Ayanami, despite a period of initial emotional control. In Ritsuko's case this was clearly because of jealousy towards Rei, and it might have also been that way with Naoko. Ritsuko’s particular attack on Rei might have been triggered when she was sent in place of Rei to Seele and put nude before them. In retaliation Ritsuko destroyed the Dummy System and with it the mindless Rei clones, insisting that what she’d really killed was Rei, her "rival".

The parallels between Gendo's relationships with both Akagi women are ironic, given that Ritsuko tries to distance herself from her mother, most obviously by dying her hair blonde to be distinct from Naoko. Flashbacks show a teenage Ritsuko with a natural hair colour that is very similar to Naoko's.

Besides this, Naoko and Ritsuko appeared to have a slightly strained relationship. Naoko apparently raised Ritsuko without what she felt was adequate supervision, which could be from where Ritsuko receives her tendency to shoulder all burdens and responsibilities in a tense situation, as she has been figuratively on her own for a long time.

Ritsuko's social difficulties, especially with romantic relationships, might also relate to this, as Naoko also blamed Ritusko’s difficulties with understanding the relationships between men and women (Ritsuko was appalled at Misato taking a week away from school with Kaji, and often comments on the perceived illogic between the interactions of men and women) on her being raised without men around. The identity of Ritsuko’s father remains unknown, and the only other family member mentioned is her grandmother (presumably from the maternal side).

Though she normally appears calm and balanced, near the end of the series Ritsuko’s normal demeanor degenerated into coldness, a breakdown which the destruction of the Dummy System was only one part of. She soon became suicidal, intending to take Gendo, Rei, and Nerv Headquarters with her in Episode 25%27. But of the Magi, which Ritsuko had reprogrammed for self-destruction, Casper rejected the command, and the shocked Ritsuko saw it as Naoko choosing Gendo over her. Before he shot Ritsuko, Gendo said something to her that was never heard, but with her last words she called him a liar, her eyes filling with tears.

Though it is not seen onscreen or even named, Ritsuko has a cat which her grandmother took care of until it died. Ritsuko apparently visited her pet very seldom, and expressed a kind of numb surprise at its death. This is also suggested by Ritsuko’s grandmother telling Ritsuko to call her first next time. In addition to owning a pet cat, Ritsuko has several cat-related knickknacks decorating her desk: a pair of cat figures (one black and one white), and a coffee mug (the same cat design on the latter can be seen in Episode 26). Kaji also once gave her a small trinket that he called "a cat souvenir" (Episode 15). This affinity for cats might have a symbolic relationship to Ritsuko’s own attempted independence, as such an urge relates to the solitary traits of cats.

Though she is rarely shown smoking onscreen, Ritsuko apparently does it quite heavily, as she is often seen with ashtrays full of cigarette butts marked by her lipstick. This might be indicative of anxiety.

The Soryu, Kaga, and Hiryu also participated in the Pearl Harbor attack.
Overview
Asuka joins Shinji’s class at school, and moves in with Misato and him in their apartment. As Asuka adjusts to Japan (or rather, everyone else adapts to her...), a new Angel attacks which is capable of splitting itself into two identical copies. Eva-01 and Eva-02 are defeated, and Nerv is publicly humiliated. With the Angel in a week-long regeneration period after an N² Mine attack by the JSSDF, Asuka and Shinji must learn to "synchronize" with each others movements combat, in order to defeat it once and for all.

Synopsis
Episode 9 opens with a series of still shots of Asuka, accompanied by a clicking camera lens. We then are shown that Toji and Kensuke have been photographing her and selling the photos. We also see in this sequence that Asuka has a locker full of love letter from admirers from her new school.

Shinji arrives on campus and Asuka greets him with a cheerful "Guten Morgen," and asks if Rei isn't there. Spotting her, Asuka doesn't wait for Shinji to introduce her, instead taking matters into her own hands by introducing herself. Asuka declares that they will be great friends, and is perplexed when Rei answers, "If I'm ordered to I'll do it." After witnessing this conversation, Toji asks if only weirdos are Eva pilots.

Back at headquarters, Kaji comes on to Ritsuko. Ritsuko, who is seemingly used to this behavior on his part, smiles and points out that Misato is watching them. When Misato demands to know why he is still in Japan, Kaji reveals that he is staying there "on loan".

Just then, alarm bells start to ring; the on-station cruiser Haruna reports that a large object has been detected approaching the Kii peninsula; the seventh Angel, Israfel, has begun his attack. Shinji and Asuka are sortied in Unit-01 and Unit-02. Though they have been ordered to work together, Asuka takes the lead and bisects Israfel with a single blow. Shinji is momentarily impressed, until the two halves revive as separate Angels.

We then cut to the aftermath of the battle, in which both pilots were defeated, and their Evas ended up upside down. At their debriefing, they bicker about who was at fault, and are lectured by Kozo Fuyutsuki. we are also told that the U.N. had interveaned and temporarily stopped Israfel with an N² Mine, which destroyed 28% of his body. But Israfel is already restoring himself.

Kaji gives Misato a plan to defeat Israfel: a coordinated simultaneous attack on each half's core. Shinji and Asuka must be in total accord in order for this mission to succeed, so it is decided that Asuka must move in with Misato and Shinji, and that the two of them will spend all of their time together in the few days remaining until it is believed Israfel will revive. Asuka comments at this point that she would rather move in with Kaji, and a little heart briefly appears on screen.

Toji and Kensuke drop by to visit Shinji, and are surprised when they meet Hikari, who has come to visit Asuka. All three are shocked that Shinji and Asuka are living together until the situation is explained to them. The training seems to be partially successful, as Shinji and Asuka speak the same lines in unison when they answer the door. But, they still have a lot of work to do. They are training to synchronize their movements by touching the same spots on separate twister mats, but constantly get it wrong. Asuka blames Shinji, but when Misato asks Rei, who is there observing, to give it a try, she and Shinji synch perfectly on the first try. Humiliated, Asuka runs from the room, prompting Hikari to command Shinji to follow her. "You made a girl cry!" When he finds her, Asuka promises to "pay back" Misato for humiliating her. They then continue their training.

The night before the battle, Misato has to work late. When Asuka hears this, while stepping out of the shower, she hints to Shinji that they are all alone. When she doesn't get any response, she storms into Misato's room to sleep alone. Later that night, she sleepwalks into Shinji's futon. He leans over to kiss her, but stops when she calls in her sleep for her mother. He realizes that she's just a child herself.

Back at headquarters, Kaji gropes Misato on the elevator; she protests only halfheartedly. A little later, Ritsuko teases Misato about her relationship with Kaji.

The day of the battle arrives. Shinji and Asuka launch their coordinated assault to music selected by Kaji. The plan works perfectly, except that after destroying both cores with a flying drop kick, they miss their landing and fall in a heap. The episode ends with them bickering over whose fault it is.

Notes
*This episode takes place soon after the previous one, effectively forming the second half of the introduction-of-Asuka story.
**Like Episode 08, Episode 09's end credits are tinted red, in honor of the arrival of Asuka and Eva 02 to Japan.
*The patrolling cruiser Haruna, which detects Israfel, is named for a World War II battleship, similar to how several of the characters have the names of World War II vessels.
*This marks the first time that Eva-01 and Eva-02 are deployed at the same time.
*When Shinji arrives at Misato's apartment to find that Asuka has moved in, and Asuka thinks that he is being kicked out in favor of her (not that both of them will live with Misato), Asuka says there wasn't enough room for all of her things, and Shinji is shocked to see that she has taken many of Shinji's things from his room and put them in a box as if to ship them out. Included in the box is the pink heart shaped plaque that first appeared in Episode 04, which reads "Shinji's Room" that Misato (apparently) hung on the door to Shinji's room.
**Asuka kicks Shinji out of his initial room in Misato's Apartment in this episode, and indeed, Asuka actually stays in this room for the rest of the series (Shinji doesn't move back in at the end of the episode). Asuka is now staying in the bigger room, while Shinji has moved into the room across the hall from Asuka which is a bit smaller and has no windows.
*Not only can an Eva pilot enter and launch an Evangelion without external aid (as seen last episode), here we see that both Asuka and Shinji can disengage their Entry Plugs and exit both of their Evas, without external help.
*During the makeshift party Misato holds while Asuka and Shinji are training, Hikari Horaki can be seen playing with Pen Pen. In Episode 24, when Tokyo-3 has to be mostly evacuated of non-essential personnel because its not safe anymore, Misato gives Pen Pen to Hikari and her family for safe keeping when they leave the city.
*Exactly 62 seconds actually do pass between when the countdown timer starts and when the battle ends.
**This is really the only time in the series that the "5 minutes of internal power, but only one minute at maximum usage" rule explained in Episode 03 is followed. At all other times, Evas have 5 minutes of internal battery power.
*At the end of the episode when the two Evas fall on top of each other in a "compromising position" and Asuka and Shinji begin bickering over what happened the night before over the open communication line, Misato is aghast and Aoba looks embarrassed beyond words, Ritsuko shrugs her shoulders as if to say, "They're pathetic, but we can't help it.", and Fuyutsuki grimaces and puts his hand to his forehead. However, Kaji openly laughs at the comic situation, Hyuga is grinning and Maya can be seen to be stifling a chuckle.

Analysis
*Timeline-wise, this episode is one of the few points in the series which can actually be firmly dated: when Misato is marking off on a calendar the day that the final battle against Israfel will take place, we see that it occurs on Friday the 11th. In 2015, Friday will fall on the 11th only in either September or December. It is not at first clear which month it is, because the bottom of the calendar cannot be seen (December has 31 days, September only 30). However, December can be ruled out, because in later episodes a period of time longer than one month passes, but it is still "2015". For example, over 30 days pass in Episode 20 alone, and if Episode 09 took place on December 11th that would push the following episodes into 2016. However, computer displays of dates after Episode 20 (i.e. on Maya Ibuki's laptop during The End of Evangelion, etc.) still say that it is "2015". Thus, the final battle against Israfel takes place on September 11th, 2015.
**The Angel Ramiel's corpse is still being cleared away in this episode, as it was also still being cleaned up in Episode 08 and Episode 07, after it was killed in Episode 06, linking all of these episodes fairly close together on the timeline. Further, Asuka is still treated as a new arrival at school, so this episode does not take place long after Episode 08, and in Episode 07, the naval convoy transporting Asuka to Japan was said to already be "on its way" from Germany. Shinji arrived in Tokyo-3 no later than August, 2015, and roughly a month passes between Episode 01 and the end of Episode 06.
*Asuka has been described by the series' creators as a girl "who seeks to put herself above all others": continuing this visual motif from Episode 08, when Asuka first introduces herself to Rei Ayanami, she apparently makes it a point to be standing on a railing so that she is physically high above Rei, as well as all of the other students. She also seems to be deliberately blocking the sun to make it more difficult for Rei to read.
*Kaji seems to flirt with Ritsuko at the beginning of this episode, which might confuse some first-time viewers into thinking they have a romantic past together. However, nothing revealed during the rest of the series ever implies that Kaji was seriously flirting with Ritsuko, and specifically flashbacks in Episode 21 to when Kaji, Misato, and Ritsuko were in college do not suggest anything of the kind. Kaji is merely "fooling around" here (in a more overt example of the "casual guy" mildly flirtatious attitude he exudes in many other episodes of the series) quite possibly to arouse jealousy out of Misato on purpose to tease her.
*During the scene in which Asuka flirts with Shinji because they're all alone and he doesn't pick up on it, it is unclear whether Asuka just wants some attention and comfort, or if she wants something beyond that. See the Director's Cut of Episode 22 and This page for more information.
*Although Asuka is normally unmovable and refuses to show signs of weakness, to the point that she will stick her head in a freezer to prevent herself from crying when she is upset, she cries in her sleep while mumbling about her mother: this will be explained in Episode 22.
*Upon close observation, Asuka is actually the one missing the beats in the synchronization game, not Shinji, even though she's loudly blaming it on him.
**To everyone's surprise but Asuka's shock and disgust, when Asuka refuses to do the training anymore Misato suggests that Rei attempt the dance routine, resulting in Rei and Shinji synchronizing perfectly on the first try.
*During Israfel's second attack, it showed the Angelic ability previously displayed by Sachiel to upgrade and evolve its abilities in response to external threats, as it had by then developed an energy blast attack fired from the faces of its two copies.
*This is the second episode in which Shinji refers to Asuka as "Soryu". Starting with Episode 10, he starts referring to her by her first name; most likely because they've grown accustomed with living together by that point, and she is no longer "new" to Tokyo-3.
Armisael is the Sixteenth Angel, and the last of Adam's natural offspring.

Biology
Armisael initially appears as a rapidly revolving ring of light, double-helical in form. Its pattern cycles between blue and orange, from which Ritsuko Akagi concludes that the Angel does not have a fixed form. The two helices eventually fuse together, and the ring severs at a single point to take on a thread-like form, several times longer than an Eva is tall.

The Angel's second form is capable of moving extremely quickly, and it effortlessly penetrates the A.T. Field of Eva-00. Point-blank fire from the Eva's sniper rifle is completely ineffective. A Progressive Knife attack makes Armisael bleed (red, as per nearly all Angels), and causes it visible pain, although it doesn't seem to have any lasting effect.

Upon contacting another being, Armisael begins to undertake "biofusion", that is, physically invading the foreign body with its own biomass. The invasion is exteriorly visible as venous protrusions that spread and thicken as fusion continues. Eventually, psychological contact becomes possible. Whether or not this methodology technically constitutes an "attack" from Armisael's perspective is ambiguous (see Psychology, below).

Armisael possesses advanced metamorphic properties.
The Angel Tower
After Armisael achieves psychological contact with Rei, a massive growth amalgamating the forms of the dead Angels manifests from Eva-00's back. The nature of this "Angel Tower" (as it is sometimes unofficially called) is steeped in mystery. The Renewal Vol. 6 DVD Booklet says this much:

In the process of eroding Unit-00, a heteromorphous object grows out of the unit's back. It enlarges and expands into a form that is a confused combination of the Angels that have previously appeared, from the Third Angel to the Fifteenth Angel. It can be deduced that the genetic information of all the Angels from the Third onwards is included in either this Angel or Unit-00, and that this object was reconstructed and deployed based on that material.

However, this assessment seems somewhat dubious, as all evidence in the show indicates that the Angels' individualized forms are not determined genetically, but by their A.T. Fields. An alternative theory suggests that Armisael had collected the souls of its dead siblings and is attempting to use Eva-00 to resurrect them. See: Theory & Analysis: Angel Rebirth.

Psychology
Armisael is confirmed within the show itself to be truly sentient. It's not certain how sentient previous Angels were, but Armisael clearly has human-level intelligence. The Angel was capable of communicating with Rei through her mind after merging with Eva 00, by appearing to her as an avatar of Rei herself.

Rei pointed out to Armisael that it felt the pain of loneliness, and Armisael seemed to imply that merging with other creatures was how it sought to end its loneliness: ultimately this may have been the reason behind its desire, indeed that of all Angels, to initiate Third Impact.

Battle
Armisael suddenly appeared hovering in the air on the outskirts of Tokyo-3. Eva 00 was launched to investigate it, but the Angel appeared dormant. Just as Eva 00 was about to withdraw so the Angel could be observed more, it transformed from its ring-shape into its thread-shaped combat form, pierced Eva 00's core with one of its thread's "ends", and began merging with Eva 00. Eva 00 shot the body of Armisael several times, but this did not stop it.

The mind of Armisael itself then contacted the mind of Rei, and engaged in a brief conversation remarking on their mutual loneliness. Eva 02 was launched, but failed to even start because Asuka's synchronization level had fallen below critical lows. In desperation, the order freezing the use of Eva 01 was suspended, but as soon as Eva 01 was launched Armisael tried to merge with it as well, with Eva 01 narrowly avoiding it.

Eva 01 grabbed Armisael's other end in its hands, and stabbed it with its prog knife, causing it to howl in pain like Rei.

Fearful for Shinji's survival, Rei set her AT Field to maximum to draw Armisael to herself and try to contain it temporarily, and then activated Eva 00's self-destruct. This resulted in a massive explosion that destroyed Armisael, but also destroyed a large portion of Tokyo-3 as well, resulting in the creating of a new artificial lake.

*In the "Director's Cut" version, the fight against Armisael is expanded:
**Armisael tries to merge with Eva 01 and Shinji is able to catch its "end" in his hands before it can reach Eva 01's core, but it then begins to merge with his hands, resulting in images of Rei popping up out of them.
**Eva 01 stabs Armisael with its progressive knife, creating a shower of blood, but it then howls in pain like Rei because she is now bonded to it.
**When the "end" of Armisael attacks Eva 01, it forms into a glowing white version of Rei which caresses Eva 01's face, and Rei realizes that her innermost desire is to be with Shinji.
**In the instant before Eva 00 self-destructs, Eva 00 transforms into a glowing-white giant nude Eva-sized image of Rei, but explodes before anything else can happen.
*Armisael is named for the angel governing the womb, and its encounter with Eva-00 contains reproductively-charged imagery.
**When Armisael initially penetrates Eva-00 in the abdomen, it resembles an umbilical cord.
**Later, Eva-00 absorbs Armisael into her core, expanding and distending the organ such that it evokes a pregnant belly.
*"Armisael" supposedly means "Mountain of Judgment of God", which, if true, might be referenced by the monstrous growth that contains the forms of all the dead Angels.
With the Angel in a week-long regeneration period after an N² Mine attack by the JSSDF, Asuka and Shinji must learn to "synchronize" in combat(and otherwise), in order to defeat it once and for all.

Go Here for more notes.
