Overview
This episode is in two parts: The first part being a clip show presented to the Human Instrumentality Committee of Seele, reviewing the attacks of all Angels up to this point. The second part includes a poem in which Rei contemplates her own existence, and a cross-compatibility test between Rei's and Shinji's Evas.

Synopsis
The episode begins with a clip of Sachiel's attack, at first showing how normal weapons prove ineffective against the Angel, before the Evangelion is deployed. Recorded statements by Misato and an excerpt from an essay by Toji Suzuhara (whose sister was hurt in the battle) are included.

Next comes the attack of the angel Shamshel, along with part of an entry from Hikari Horaki's diary. The clip of Shamshel's attack ends with a statement that a final report on the analysis of the Angel's body has yet to be filed.

Ramiel's attack is accompanied by another excerpt, this time from Kensuke Aida, who mentions Rei Ayanami's selfless protection of Eva-01 during the battle.

Gaghiel's attack is notable in deviating from the scenario envisioned by Seele. However, the committee decides that the results were within "the projected parameters" and that "necessary adjustments could be made". A full third of the U.N. Fleet is described as being lost, and it is further mentioned that all the lost vessels are American, but the French committee member comments that the loss was actually minor.

Israfel's attack, Sandalphon's attempted capture, Matarael's and Sahaquiel's attacks all follow in sequence. When it comes to Ireul's invasion, the facts are listed as unconfirmed, although it is rumored that the Angel penetrated Nerv headquarters. This causes a great deal of concern among the committee, despite Gendo's reassurance that no such attack ever took place.

The meeting ends with Lorenz leaving all matters of crime and responsibility to Gendo, and adding that he does not need to create a new scenario.

The second part of the episode contains a poem by Rei Ayanami, contemplating the nature of her own existence, and asking questions about herself and about human beings. After the poem, Rei is seen during a cross-compatibility test with Eva-01, in which her synch ratio is reported to be almost the same as with Eva-00. However, the second part of the test- Shinji's synch with Eva 00, goes bad when the A10 nerve connections are complete. Eva-00 goes berserk in the same way as it did during the flashback in Episode 05, although Shinji escapes with only minor memory loss.

Fuyutsuki and Gendo discuss about the committee, the eleventh angel's invasion and Eva-00's berserk incident, at the end of which Rei is seen back in Eva-00, carrying the Spear of Longinus.

Notes
*This episode is basically a clip show, done to save production costs for other episodes. The first half is purely clips from old episodes with some voice over narrations, while the second half is still created mostly just by recycling animation from previous episodes.
**The clip-show recycling of scenes is most obvious in the scene of-Eva 00 going berserk: the animation of Eva-00 going berserk from Episode 05 was clearly just reused and recolored to change Eva-00's armor from orange to blue, and it is not equipped with shoulder-armor pylons, because it didn't have those yet in Episode 05. Eva-01 and Eva-02 are also animated in this episode without shoulder-armor pylons to try to stay consistent about this, as if there was a reason that they were taken off of each Eva for the test; presumably it was cheaper to draw a new shot of the stationary Eva-01 and Eva-02 without shoulder pylons (one frame each), than redo the entire complex scene of Eva-00 going berserk. However, the end shot of Eva-00 bashing its head against the wall is entirely new.
**A conceit of this episode's clip show format is the explanation that it is a "review" of reports on all Angel attacks by Seele. However, this quickly runs into complications as the episode is obviously just reusing footage from past episodes, much of which could not possibly have been captured by surveillance cameras i.e. looking at the Evas from the Angel Israfel's viewpoint, getting a view inside Gaghiel's mouth from the inside looking out, shots showing both Sandalphon and Eva-02 in the same frame while they are in an active volcano and nothing else can be holding a "camera", etc. etc.
**Oddly, the "recap" footage of Sahaquiel exploding in Episode 12 is actually noticeably different from the animation of the same scene which was originally used in Episode 12.
*In this episode, we first learn the names of the Angels, from the Third Angel (Sachiel, which Shinji fought in the first episode) through the Tenth Angel, named Sahaquiel. Presumably, the names of the Angels are derived from the prophecies in the Dead Sea Scrolls about the coming of the Angels.
*Ritsuko's "mutual compatibility experiment" marks the first time that it has been attempted to switch Eva pilots between Evangelions. Rei could synch with Eva-01 fairly well, but when Shinji tried to synch with Eva-00, it went berserk. Evangelions are thus permanently associated with exclusively one pilot, and while Ritsuko considered the experiment enough of a success to begin work on the Dummy Plug system, pilots are never really switched between Evas in the series.
*First mention of Seele's use of the Dead Sea Scrolls as a guide for their "scenario".
*Misato's narrated report on Eva-01's fight against Sachiel commends Shinji on his performance under duress in his first battle. However, Shinji himself didn't really defeat the Angel; Eva-01 went berserk and he wasn't in control of it. This might be a hint that Gendo is hiding information about the Evas and their ability to go berserk. At the least, Misato is "out of the loop" and doesn't seem to understand that Shinji wasn't really controlling Eva-01 when Sachiel was defeated.
*In Seele's briefing, it is said that one third of the UN naval fleet in Episode 8 was destroyed by the Angel Gaghiel. Their dialogue also reveals that the "green"-colored Committee member represents the United States. According to the Instrumentality Committee, Gaghiel's attack "deviated from scenario", although the Committee comfortably writes off the massive naval losses in the encounter as "fortunately minor". This betrays the extreme callousness of the committee towards anything but their own project. Critically, the committee have failed to realize why the attack deviated from their scenario - Gaghiel was attracted to Adam, who was being smuggled aboard the convoy. It seems that according to Seele's "scenario", the Angels would only ever attack Tokyo-3.
*Ireul's invasion of Nerv in the previous episode was a genuine cause of concern for the Committee, who feared it might cause Third Impact. Gendo invites them to examine the Magi's data recorders, but they know he can fabricate those. Ultimately, Seele chooses to wave off Gendo's smokescreen, ignoring it as Gendo saving face.
**The committee members are extremely distrustful of Gendo, the Russian (blue committee member) going so far as to say "distorting the truth is your specialty". Chairman Kiel appears to be the only one willing to trust Gendo for any length of time.
**Fuyutsuki is just as antagonistic towards the Committee, saying that they have nothing to do but complain. Gendo, however, is willing to test their patience.
*This is the second time that Eva-00 has gone "berserk" for no clear reason (of course, this is because the animation of Eva-00 going berserk here is just a re-use of the footage of it going berserk back in Episode 05). Rei's simulation body, connected to Eva-00, was also infected by the Angel Ireul last episode, and in similar fashion the simulation body Rei was in raised its hand towards the control box, but Ritsuko blew its arm off with demolition charges before it could do anything.
*Asuka sarcastically taunts Shinji by asking if being in Eva-00's Entry Plug is like being in his mother's womb.
*After mentioning the Eva-00 berserk incident, Fuyutsuki himself feels that Gendo is too concerned with Rei.
*The Spear of Longinus is first referred to by name, and this is the first time it is seen outside its wrappings. When it first appeared in Episode 12, it was wrapped in tarmac and it was unclear what it was.
*According to the radio broadcast heard in the background when Asuka is laying in bed, political unrest is still taking place in the Nansha Islands in the form of terrorist suicide bombings, 12 years after China and Vietnam went to war over control of the island group's resources in 2003 as a result of post-Second Impact tensions.
*The shoulder-armor pylons on Evangelions do not actually contain any biological part of the Eva, underneath the armor. The entire pylon is just an extension of the Eva's outer armor. As seen here, the pylons can actually be removed should the need arise, in this case to fit them into external restraints; besides Eva-00, both Eva-01 and Eva-02, which always had shoulder-armor pylons, are here seen without them.
*Ritsuko and Maya discuss how the "mutual compatibility experiment"'s relative success means that they will now be moving forward with the development of the "Dummy Plug" project, though Maya expresses trepidation about it...
*Animation goof: briefly when Asuka is taunting Shinji, when the shot is focused on Asuka again and she's asking aloud why everyone always pampers Shinji, the visual intercom box with Shinji displayed inside says that he is broadcasting from "Eva-01", even though for this episode only, he's actually in Eva-00.
*During the clip-show montage of images from earlier in the series, a shot is shown of when Shinji fell on Rei in Episode 05 with his hand directly on Rei's breast. When this episode aired on Adult Swim, this shot was edited out of this episode. Of course, the brief shot of Shinji's hand on Rei's breast was edited out of Episode 05 as well when it originally aired on Adult Swim, so the flashback to a removed scene was simply not used.

Analysis
*What causes Rei to recite her internal, self-examining poem while in the Entry Plug of Eva-01? Is it possibly somehow related to the fact that Rei is a physical clone of Yui Ikari, and Yui Ikari's soul is contained inside of Eva-01?
**Rei asks "Anata dare?" - "Who are you?" as Eva-01's exposed head is shown, implying that Rei is asking the Eva the question. In Episode 19, it is heavily implied that Rei physically does not dream. So if Rei isn't dreaming or having a "day dream" of sorts, what is this vision-poem she seems to have? Rei is normally totally stoic, but she actually seems surprised at the end of her poem - was it because Ritsuko roused her or is it because she came to realize what the Eva truly is?
*What does Rei mean in the middle of her poem when she refers to "a woman that doesn't bleed"? No corresponding image is displayed on the screen when she says this, just a shot of a tunnel formed by tiny red dots receding to infinity, etc. Is this meant to imply that Rei does not menstruate?
**It's not really clear what it is referring to. Certainly, Rei has been seen to "bleed" normal human blood from wounds (she doesn't just have LCL running through her veins). Episode 19 did heavily imply that Rei doesn't dream; it's possible that there are other things normal humans experience that she doesn't.
**However, this line could also be referring to Lilith, who "bleeds" LCL, not human blood.
*In her poem, Rei says that she doesn't like the color red. Asuka pilots Eva-02, which is red, and wears a matching red Plug suit; is it possible that this means Rei doesn't like Asuka?
*Eva-00 and Eva-01 are said to have "very similar personal data patterns"; Rei's synch rate with Eva 01 is almost the same as it was with Eva-00, and Shinji's synch ratio with Eva-00 is only slightly lower than what it normally is with Eva-01. However, Misato says that she thinks Eva-02 would definitely be incompatible: why? Further, it is strange that Misato is the one thinking this: Misato does not really understand the true inner workings of the Evangelions, that they each contain a human soul. If Rei, hypothetically, is synchronizing well with Eva-01 because she is a clone of Yui Ikari, who's soul is contained in Eva-01, Misato wouldn't know it at this point. So if Eva-02 probably wouldn't be interchangeable because its soul would be unrelated to another pilot...why is Misato, who doesn't know Evas contain souls at all, the one thinking this? There is always the possibility that the director for the episode just wanted to vary up the dialogue and gave Misato a line which was actually better suited to Ritsuko: technically, Ritsuko is the only person in the room who knows the true nature about Evas and the souls they contain, and only giving relevant dialogue like that only to Ritsuko would have basically amount to a monologue by Dr. Akagi.
**What makes it even stranger is that Misato was with Asuka and Shinji in Episode 08, where both of them broke their synch records with Eva-02. Aside from the initial problems with Shinji "thinking in Japanese", there seems to have been no problem at all with Shinji synching with Eva-02, and if Misato herself noted it, why would she suddenly dismiss Shinji as being incompatible with Eva-02?
*It is of course ironic that Asuka compares Shinji being in an Evangelion to being in his mother's womb, because when Shinji is (normally) in Eva-01, he is in a sense literally "inside" of his mother because his mother's soul is bonded to Eva-01.
*When Ritsuko is shocked that Eva-00 is out of control, she lets slip a comment saying "The same thing as before...is it going to try to absorb Shinji?" which seems to be the first reference to the fact that Yui Ikari was absorbed into Eva-01. Of course, it's not clear if Eva-00 really was going to absorb Shinji, this was just Ritsuko's conjecture, and the line before she simply thought that it was rejecting Shinji. In either case, neither Misato nor anyone else noticed what Ritsuko let slip, because their attention was held by the out-of-control and dangerously violent Eva-00.
*Is Eva-00 trying to kill Shinji, because he's not the normal pilot? When Eva-00 went berserk in Episode 05, it didn't start damaging itself by bashing its own head into a wall as it does now. Is this just a sign of Eva-00's revulsion at someone other than its normal pilot being inside of it?
**Was the soul contained inside of Eva-00 horrified at its current state trapped in an Eva, and thus Eva-00 was trying to destroy itself?
**The Eva might have just been using its pointed helmet to bash a hole in the control room wall, to attack somebody inside.
*What was the vision that Shinji saw when he began to synchronize with Eva-00? Was it some form of mental imprint left behind by Rei, or was it a clue as to the soul contained inside of Eva-00?
**This adds another layer: perhaps the montage of images that Rei saw while in Eva-01 were not internal, but the "mental imprint" left behind by Shinji, and she just composed her "poem" on the spot in response to what she was seeing. Indeed, many of the images during Rei's montage were images from when Shinji ran away to the countryside around Tokyo-3 in Episode 04 (of course, they could just be reusing those images here for economical reasons, but it does raise the question of if the production team made conscious choice to use those specific scenes and not just another one).
***Rei didn't see a floating image of Shinji the way Shinji sees a vision of Rei. Rei's montage of images was probably not meant to be an "impression" of Shinji the way Shinji sees a vision of Rei.
***Shinji's reaction to the visions of Rei he sees is: "What is this? Something's trying to get directly into my brain. Ayanami? Rei Ayanami? This impression is Rei Ayanami, isn't it? Ayanami?...or maybe not?" This could be interpreted several ways, one for example being that it's "maybe not" because it is really "Rei I" that he is seeing and not the "Rei II" that he knows.

The Soul in Evangelion Unit-00
Every Evangelion actually contains a human soul. Eva-01 is later revealed to contain the soul of Shinji's mother Yui, and Eva-02 is later revealed to contain (part of) the soul of Asuka's mother Kyoko. So whose soul is in Rei's Eva, Evangelion Unit-00? It was never directly revealed, and is one of the major mysteries of the series. However, several clues have been dropped on the subject.

Some points/comments. (Please do not insert replies "into" the following text; quote the relevant parts instead.)

* This article needs to devour "Tabris".
* Kaworu is ... biologically no different from any other normal human: Does this take genome into account? Kaworu is arguably a hybrid entity (albeit one who seems to ignore virtually all of one parent's contributions...; we can always blame Seele).
* He appears to have been created during Second Impact due to a fusion of human genes with Adam's matter: The phrasing here bothers me. "Adam's matter". Almost naturally implies that the DNA fused with some random glob of Adam and Kaworu magically appeared. As a strong defender of the elegant "immaculate conception" line of thought, I wonder if there is something more "openly vague" that could be used.
* lacks a Core or even an S2 organ: I'm not sure there's much information here one way or the other.
* Unlike normal humans, he has the ability to levitate, perhaps as an A.T. Field related ability.: Considering the XBOX HUEG manifestation of the trademark ATF Blur the moment Kaworu steps off the umbilical bridge, I would say, "Not perhaps, Very Yes."
* Kaworu puppeted Eva 02: Is "puppeted" the best word? Also, "Eva 02" is inconsistent with site convention.
* only to discover that the giant crucified inside was not Adam, but Lilith: Some would argue that Kaworu already knew, but went down there anyway. LOL.
* The name "Nagisa" is a pun.: I'm not sure if the person who named Kaworu (not Anno) did it with punning in mind. It could, however, be decisively said that episode #24's title is a pun.
* There has been some confusion as to whether Kaworu is truly an actual "Angel": Is this "Angel" defined as "offspring of Adam"?
* Dr. Katsuragi himself has been speculated to be the donor, but there never has been any official statement to this effect.: I think canonical stuff either poses a question about who it is or says that the donor is unknown. Lamers.
LCL Plant Door
About how Kaworu opened the L.C.L. plant- I'm not sure he used the A.T. Field to open it, or else the whole door would have been wrecked before Shinji threw EVA-02 through it. Kaji opens a human-sized door with his I.D. Card, and the Eva pilots have similar cards. Kaworu could simply have used his to open it.(Notice how Kaworu's eyes glance to the right just before he enters)

Or, considering that he came in through the Eva-sized door, he probably pushed/pulled a lever, either with or without the A.T. Field (He might have used the Field because I doubt his physical strength is anything great). Either way, he didn't "bypass the locking mechanism" or anything so exotic- he'd have to physically damage the door to bypass it instead of just using it.

--UrsusArctos 21:14, 12 August 2007 (EDT)

:No ID card is involved. You can see the entire mechanism as it goes, completely untouched, from "locked" to "open". I don't see how else Kaworu could have accomplished this feat aside from utilizing some previously unseen form of ATF Voodoo.

:Kaworu enters through the same door Kaji and Misato use in 15. Compare the corridor's neon orange lines. --Reichu 22:15, 12 August 2007 (EDT)
Kaworu in Sadamoto's Manga
The way the information is written...It makes me cry tears of pain! ;_;

*His homosexual overtones, while debatable in the anime, are overly evident in the manga--while Shinji is staying at Kaworu's has a nightmare during which he hyperventilates, Kaworu kisses him in his sleep. When Shinji leaves his room he is sad that Shinji didn't even bother to say goodbye. Context, please? That didn't seem to be a kiss to me (He was trying to get Shinji to stop hyperventilating and Shinji took it the wrong way), and Kaworu's orientation or lack thereof doesn't need to be taken as "overtones". And anyway, you forgot about Kaworu wanting to know what "Shinji thinks of [him]". :P

*Sadamoto's portrayal of Kaworu is known by the moniker "EMK" or "Evil Manga Kaworu" by fans, many of whom have taken great umbrage with his kitten-killing. Should something like a fan-term even be mentioned on this page?

Thoughts on whether or not above should be changed? I'll fix these if somebody wants me to. --Sailor Star Dust 16:13, 22 October 2007 (PDT)

:Yes, I think it needs changing. Also, I think the note at the top--

:Write this as if Sadamoto's "Kaworu Nagisa" is a completely different person who just happens to have the same name as the other Kaworu, along with looking kinda similar. NPOV all the way; EMK-mindset will get us nowhere here.
Adam (Hebrew: בראשית ,אדם i:xxvi) is the designation of the First Angel, the first of Earth's two Seeds of Life and the progenitor of the Third through Seventeenth Angels. She is also the genetic basis of the Evangelions (with the possible exception of Eva-01).

Biology
Adam's distinct physical features are never clearly shown, since, in the available glimpses of Adam's adult form, she is either partially covered by ice or in the form of a glowing silhouette, the "Giant of Light". However, she is visibly a giant humanoid with a morphology strikingly similar to that of an Evangelion, which is appropriate considering the genetic relationship between Adam and the Evas.

The Giant of Light is observed with shoulder pylons, although a still-shot of the Katsuragi Expedition excavating Adam (Episode 23) confirms that the pylons were not initially present, implying that--similarly to what would be done with the Evas later--they were added as restraint mechanisms by the research team.

Adam possesses the ability to manifest translucent "wings" ("Wings of Light"), which she begins to spread before reaching the surface of the research base. These greatly enlarge and split into four upon Adam's explosion.

Second Impact reduced Adam's body into an embryonic state resembling a tetrapod embryo (complete with four defined limbs) in early development.

Origins & Discovery
Adam was created by the First Ancestral Race billions of years ago and sent to Earth within the White Moon to fill the Earth with her progeny, the Angels. However, before Adam could accomplish her mission, the "Black Moon" transport containing a second Seed of Life, Lilith, accidentally crash landed onto Earth. Two Seeds are not meant to exist on the same planet, and in the event that this accidentally occurs a Spear of Longinus which all Seeds are accompanied with should inactivate one Seed. However, the Spear accompanying Lilith was destroyed in the crash, leaving Adam's Spear as the only functional one on Earth. Thus, Adam was placed into suspended animation by her own Spear of Longinus, and the progeny of Lilith populated the planet instead of Angels.

The inert Adam, and the Spear upon which she was impaled, were later discovered by the Katsuragi Expedition Team. Adam — especially her "S² Engine" — became the subject of intense scientific inquiry. This culminated in the so-called Contact Experiment, of which little is known beyond the involvement of a human "donor", DNA "diving" into Adam and "physically fusing", and Second Impact being ushered in as a result. It is heavily implied that the experiment produced the being that became known as Kaworu Nagisa.

:See: Theory and Analysis: Kaworu's Origins.

Second Impact
In the Contact Experiment's aftermath, Adam manifested an Anti A.T. Field (which produced the "thorough extermination of all life, including microorganisms"), altered the local "atmospheric elements", and opened her Doors of Guf — all actions implying the reawakened Adam was attempting to reclaim the Earth. (See: Theory and Analysis: Second Impact.) The Katsuragi Team's attempt to subdue Adam with the Spear of Longinus produced undesired results and ultimately failed. Adam's S² Engine went beyond the control of both herself and the research team, transforming her into the "Giant of Light" and ultimately triggering her own self-destruction. The worldwide annihilation of Lilith-based life was averted, but not without cost: a global calamity known as Second Impact.

After Adam herself exploded, four massive Wings of Light (likened to those of a "devil", "akuma", in the script) manifested and extended as high as the stratosphere. The actual effect brought on by the earlier utilization of the Spear caused Adam's reversion into an embryonic or egg state, rather than being destroyed completely (Chronicle). (How she could explode and retrovert at the same time is never explained.) Adam's soul was separated from her body, presumably when her core was destroyed in the explosion.

Post-Second Impact
Seele retrieved both Adam's soul and what remained of her body from the "Dead Sea" that has once been Antarctica. While the former was salvaged into Tabris, the embryo became the subject of the Adam Project and the basis for the "Adam Revival Project", better known as Project E, which aimed to create Adam copies, or Evangelions.

In 2015, the embryonic Adam is clandestinely obtained by Ryoji Kaji, smuggled into Japan via the United Nations Pacific Fleet, and delivered to Gendo Ikari at Nerv Headquarters. He notes, "It's already restored itself this far. It's frozen inside dura-bakelite, but it's still alive. Without a doubt, this is the keystone of the Human Instrumentality Project, isn't it?" Exactly what Kaji means by "keystone" is ambiguous. (Episode 08)

Adam is a crucial element in Gendo's own scenario for Third Impact, wherein he intends to use the "forbidden fusion of Adam and Lilith" as a means to achieve reunion with Yui. At an undisclosed point, Gendo has Adam fused into his right palm, and, in the moments before Third Impact, he inserts his hand into Rei. However, rather than carry out his wishes, Rei severs and absorbs Gendo's arm — fusing with Adam, but rejecting Gendo. The "forbidden fusion" is complete when Rei returns to Lilith.

The resultant "Gestalt entity" is Lilith-dominant, only momentarily splitting into "Adam" and "Lilith" parts (shortly before Eva-01 transforms into the Tree of Life). Adam manifests in the form of a giant, ghostly white Kaworu Nagisa, which, together with subsequent appearances of the Kaworu avatar, implies that Gendo had salvaged Adam's soul back into her body shortly after Kaworu's death.

The conglomerate being of which Adam became part dies when Shinji rejects Instrumentality. In spite of this, Lilith seems to continue existing in some form afterwards. Adam's own fate, however, is unknown.

Notes
*Upon receiving Adam, Gendo refers to her as "the first human". This is potentially a cryptic reference to Adam's status as the first human being on Earth (utilizing NGE's expanded definition of "human", which actually includes Angels as well as humans).

*Adam is referred to in The Book of Adam and Eve as "The Bright Angel". It may not be a coincidence that Adam appears as a Giant of Light in the series. Similarly, Adam is said to have stretched from "The Earth to the Firmament(Sky)", which may be referenced by the show in that Adam's wings spread to the upper atmosphere during Second Impact.

*The second book of Enoch refers to Adam as the Second Angel. Adam is the First Angel, and Lilith, not Adam, is the Second Angel. However, all humans descend from the Second Angel, whether Adam in Enoch, or Lilith in Evangelion.

*Under the text labeling for the Adam embryo seen in the opening are three lines in cursive writing and some Kanji under the label reading "Caution". It is debatable what the first cursive line is supposed to say. Guesses include "Whoisyou", "Whoisaman" and "Whoisadam". There are flaws in the cursive writing regardless of which of the three it is. The second and third cursive lines are much clearer. The second is "Heis living" and the third is "why?".

Hideaki Anno (庵野秀明 Anno Hideaki) is the director of Neon Genesis Evangelion, The End of Evangelion, and Rebuild of Evangelion. Anno is the creator of the Evangelion story, and wrote or co-wrote the script for every episode of the TV series (except for Episode 04). He was one of the founding members of Gainax anime studio. Anno eventually left animation to work on several live action films, only to return to animation in 2006 with the formation of Studio Khara to produce the Rebuild of Evangelion films.

Hideaki Anno on Neon Genesis Evangelion
*-Hideaki Anno in a pre-production interview, translated for Viz comics by Mari Morimoto and Fred Burke and put in the first collection volume of the Evangelion Manga:

"The year: 2015. A world where, fifteen years before, over half the human population perished. A world that has been miraculously revived: its economy, the production, circulation, consumption of material goods, so that even the shelves of convenience stores are filled. A world where the people have gotten used to the resurrection-yet still feel the end of the world is destined to come. A world where the number of children, the future leaders of the world, is few. A world where Japan saw the original Tokyo destroyed, discarded and forgotten, and built a new capital in Nagano Prefecture. They constructed a new capital, Tokyo-2, then left it to be a decoy-then constructed another new capital, Tokyo-3, and tried to make it safe from attack. A world where some completely unknown enemy called the "Angels" comes to ravage the cities.

This is roughly the worldview for Neon Genesis Evangelion. This is a worldview drenched in a vision of pessimism. A worldview where the story starts only after any traces of optimism have been removed.

And in that world, a 14-year-old boy shrinks from human contact. And he tries to live in a closed world where his behavior dooms him, and he has abandoned the attempt to understand himself. A cowardly young man who feels that his father has abandoned him, and so he has convinced himself that he is a completely unnecessary person, so much so that he cannot even commit suicide.

And there is a 29-year-old woman who lives life so lightly as to barely allow the possibility of a human touch. She protects herself by having surface level relationships, and running away.

Both are extremely afraid of being hurt. Both are unsuitable--lacking the positive attitude--for what people call heroes of an adventure. But in any case, they are the heroes of this story.

They say, "To live is to change." I started this production with the wish that once the production complete, the world, and the heroes would change. That was my "true" desire. I tried to include everything of myself in Neon Genesis Evangelion--myself, a broken man who could do nothing for four years. A man who ran away for four years, one who was simply not dead. Then one thought. "You can't run away," came to me, and I restarted this production. It is a production where my only thought was to burn my feelings into film. I know my behavior was thoughtless, troublesome, and arrogant. But I tried. I don't know what the result will be. That is because within me, the story is not yet finished. I don't know what will happen to Shinji, Misato or Rei. I don't know where life will take them. Because I don't know where life is taking the staff of the production. I feel that I am being irresponsible. But... But it's only natural that we should synchronize ourselves with the world within the production. I've taken on a risk: "It's just an imitation." And for now I can only write this explanation. But perhaps our "original" lies somewhere within there.

July 17, 1995,
In the studio, a cloudy, rainy day.

PS.

By the way, Shinji's name came from a friend of mine. Misato's name came from the hero of a manga. The name Ritsuko came from a friend of mine in middle school. I borrowed from everywhere. Even names that have no bearing on anything actually came from the countless rules that govern these things. It might be fun if someone with free time could research them."

*-Hideaki Anno, translated by Miyako Graham from 11/96 Newtype in Protoculture Addicts #43:

"Evangelion is like a puzzle, you know. Any person can see it and give his/her own answer. In other words, we're offering viewers to think by themselves, so that each person can imagine his/her own world. We will never offer the answers, even in the theatrical version. As for many Evangelion viewers, they may expect us to provide the 'all-about Eva' manuals, but there is no such thing. Don't expect to get answers by someone. Don't expect to be catered to all the time. We all have to find our own answers."

*-Hideaki Anno, translated from 11/96 Newtype in Protoculture Addicts #43:

"Evangelion is my life and I have put everything I know into this work. This is my entire life. My life itself."

The Dead Sea Scrolls, also called the Secret Dead Sea Scrolls, are a set of documents written by the god-like progenitor aliens known as the "First Ancestral Race" and during the series, in the possession of the Seele organization. The scrolls are never seen onscreen during the series except for a page of text seen in the final scene of the opening.

Little is known about the Dead Sea Scrolls from the series, except that they can be used to predict the arrival of each Angel and contain information pertaining to Adam, Lilith, the Spear of Longinus, and events such as the Second Impact and Third Impact.

More information about the scrolls was revealed in the Classified Information files, which are considered Tier 2 or Tier 3 Canon depending on whether or not they were quoted directly from Anno himself.

According to the Classified Information files, Seele was originally a clandestine religious organization and actively sponsored searches for relics belonging to its faith, under the public image of being a patron of the arts. After acquiring the Dead Sea Scrolls, Seele evolved into the organization it was at the time of Neon Genesis Evangelion. The CI files explicitly state that the scrolls were of extraterrestrial origin and that they contained information on the Seeds of Life and the Spear of Longinus. The Dead Sea Scrolls that were released to the public were portions of the Secret Dead Sea Scrolls which were devoid of any valuable information.

The Dead Sea Scrolls in Real Life
In real life, the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered in eleven caves at Qumran, on the northwestern shore of the Dead Sea, 13 miles(20 kilometers) to the east of Jerusalem. The texts are mostly fragmented, with the exception of a few relatively intact scripts. Scripts and script fragments are numbered according to the cave they were found in. A number of scrolls are in Hebrew, while others are in the Aramaic language. Fragments of every book of the Old Testament, except for the book of Esther, have been found among the Dead Sea Scrolls.

A number of scrolls had not been made available to the public at the time of the series' production. They have been since released, and the mystery surrounding their contents has since disappeared.

*For more on the real-life Dead Sea Scrolls, see the External Links section.

Notes
*The single page from the Secret Dead Sea Scrolls that appears in the opening credits contains symbols vaguely similar to the "Angelic letters", a modified form of the Hebrew alphabet.

*During Instrumentality, the Mass Production Evangelions generate a giant Sephirothic Tree of Life made out of energy, made out of images of giant Hebrew letters and circles floating in the sky. It is possible that this implies that ancient Judaism and the mysticism of the Kabbalah were actually influenced by the alien knowledge of the "Dead Sea Scrolls". Although the Seele power cabal eventually acquired the Scrolls, their exact history from when they arrived on Earth up until the present day is not revealed. It is possible that ancient Jewish mystics or cults found the manual-artifact the First Ancestral Race left with one of the Seeds of Life (but which got separated from a Seed and due to tectonic shifts ended up in the Dead Sea area). These mystic cults then decoded much of the manual, and the knowledge of the universe which it imparted onto them greatly affected their beliefs and rituals, i.e. that the Kabbalistic "Tree of Life" is actually a real energy pattern. Ultimately, after hundreds of years Seele acquired the "Dead Sea Scrolls" in 1947, but realized that it was actually literally true and of extraterrestrial origin.

Notes
*The single page from the Secret Dead Sea Scrolls that appears in the opening credits contains symbols vaguely similar to the "Angelic letters", a modified form of the Hebrew alphabet.

*During Instrumentality, the Mass Production Evangelions generate a giant Tree of Sephiroth made out of energy, made out of images of giant Hebrew letters and circles floating in the sky. These mystic cults then decoded much of the manual, and the knowledge of the universe which it imparted onto them greatly affected their beliefs and rituals, i.e. that the "Tree of Sephiroth" belief of the Kabbalah is actually a real energy pattern. Ultimately, after hundreds of years Seele acquired the "Dead Sea Scrolls" in 1947, but realized that it was actually literally true and of extraterrestrial origin.

Seele (German: soul) is a shadowy and mysterious organization which maintains a global power cabal, and is the secret backer of Gehirn and Nerv. The Seele council members are the true puppet masters pulling the strings of the United Nations.

The origins of Seele are shrouded in mystery. According to themselves, they have maintained an Illuminati-like power cabal over Earth's governments since ancient times. While this can not be independently confirmed, it is certain that Seele has been active since at least the end of World War II, when they acquired the Dead Sea Scrolls.

The Seele council is composed of 12 members, headed by Chairman Keel Lorenz. Seele meetings consist of "video conferences" in which instead of projecting actual images of each member, images of large stone monoliths with the words "SEELE (member number) SOUND ONLY" displayed on them (i.e. Chairman Keel is "SEELE 01 SOUND ONLY").

Apparently the inner circle of Seele is the Human Instrumentality Committee, which directly oversees the progress of Nerv, officially in the name of the United Nations (which it actually controls). The committee is composed of five members, and is also headed by Chairman Keel.

Notes
*"Seele" is consistently spelled using all-capital letters in the series, however it is apparently not an acronym. As with "Nerv", spelling it in all characters was just a quirk of translation by the Japanese production team.
*The use of monoliths as representatives of Seele is regarded as an homage to the evolution inducing monoliths from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
*In almost all appearances of the full Seele council, there are 12 council members. However, in the "Director's Cut" scene added to Episode 24 of Kaworu conversing with the monoliths at the lake, 15 Seele council monoliths are are shown (a monolith displaying "Seele 15" is even clearly visible). The reason for this discrepancy is not clear, and the scene itself seems surreal. See Episode 24' Analysis for analysis of this scene.

Creation
The nine Mass Production Model Evangelions, Eva-05 through Eva-13, were manufactured by Seele at seven different facilities throughout the globe. The specifics of their creation are unknown, but presumably they were, like prior Evas, made from Adam's genetic material.

Nine Mass Production Evangelions were created out of an originally planned twelve Evangelions (through Eva-16). However, Seele had to advance the construction schedule for them, as they knew that wanted to initiate Third Impact as soon as the final Angel was destroyed, and as a result three MP Evas were never completed.

The MP Evangelions were deployed as part of Seele's assault on the Nerv Geofront, but primarily to be utilized as part of Third Impact in conjunction with Evangelion Unit-01.

Abilities
The MP Evangelions have all been furnished with S² Engines, eliminating the need for umbilical cables or internal batteries. However, unlike Angels, they do not appear to utilize their organs for regenerative purposes (see notes).

They also possess large, fully retractable mechanical wings (with an extended "tail" piece), attached to their shoulders. Considering the Evas' size and weight, traditional flight (as observed in birds, bats, and pterosaurs) would normally be impossible, so the wings would feasibly be used in concert with A.T. Field-based "anti-gravity". The Evas are observed levitating in a more traditional manner (as per various Angels) later on, with their wings spread but serving no apparent function.

Rather than being controlled by living pilots, they synchronize with dummy systems generated from Kaworu Nagisa's thought patterns. This eliminates a disadvantage of traditional piloting: While Evangelions can only truly die if their cores receives sufficient damage, their pilots are considerably more fragile, being susceptible to injury inside the plug, along with trauma associated with synchronization, such as sympathetic pain and even (in some rare cases) vicariously-transferred damage. The absence of a living pilot may play a large part in the MP Evas' collective ability to receive immense amounts of damage without losing functionality. Removing the dummy plug or outright destroying the core (which contains the S² Engine) would be the only truly effective or efficient means of neutralizing one.

They carry no armament except for giant, gray swords that shift into replicas of the Spear of Longinus.

Specific Mass Production Units
Computer displays clearly list the Mass Production Evangelions as "Eva-05" through "Eva-13", however, their designations are not painted on their shoulders or arms, unlike the regular Evangelions. This might have been to avoid animating the designations each time (The other Evas did not have their designations drawn each time) and also to avoid continuity confusion.

However, production sketches do reveal the specific designations of each of the nine Mass Production Evas. In the order in which Eva-02 engaged them in combat:

*Evangelion Unit-09 - Attacked by Asuka with a flying-jump "skullbuster" move which tore off its upper jaw and smashed its brain pan to pulp, after which Asuka held it over Eva-02 and broke it in two, spilling its blood all over Eva-02.
*Evangelion Unit-11 - Pushed into the lake with Eva-02, then stabbed through the top of its head with Eva 02's Progressive Knife; the blade snapped off, impaled in its upper jaw and projecting into its mouth.
*Evangelion Unit-07 - Right arm cut off by Eva-02's Prog Knife, after which its neck was snapped backwards: it's head actually dangles behind it (touching its back) after this.
*Evangelion Unit-06 - Dueled Eva-02 using Heavy Spears, until Eva-02 was able to land a direct hit between its left shoulder and neck, cleaving downwards to the center of Eva-06's torso.
*Evangelion Unit-12 - Completely cut in half by Eva-02 using a Heavy Spear, through the waist, its upper half sent spiraling through the air.
*Evangelion Unit-08 - Left leg cut off at the knee by Eva-02 using a Heavy Spear, causing it to lose balance and fall on its back.
*Evangelion Unit-10 - Tackles Eva-02, prompting Asuka to fire two volleys of missile-spikes through its head, using the spike-launcher in Eva-02's right shoulder pylon. The metal spikes remain impaled through Unit 10's devastated head throughout all of its subsequent appearances.
*Evangelion Unit-05 - Pushed through a wall by Eva-02, resulting in damage to its neck, then thrown through the air into Eva-13; after which it was completely impaled by Eva-02's arm as it punched a hole clear through its torso.
*Evangelion Unit-13 - Eva-02 threw Eva-05 into it, then as Eva-02's fist came out the other side of Eva-05 as it impaled it, Eva-02's fist punched into Eva-13's chest. Eva-02 squeezed its fist inside of Eva-13 as it writhed in pain.

The Spear-Thrower (Theory and Analysis)
It is not entirely clear which MP Eva is the one that threw the replica Spear of Longinus which took out Eva-02. However, analysis sheds some light on the question:

*Eva-05 and Eva-13 could obviously not have thrown it, because they are in the same frame as Eva 02 (impaled on its arm after the super-punch).
*Eva-10 is clearly shown getting up and reactivating, only after Eva-02 is impaled through the head. Eva-11 is clearly shown to begin reactivating while it is still partially submerged in the lake, having not moved between when it was stabbed and went it reactivated). Eva-09 is also shown to be reactivating after Eva-02 the Spear is thrown, albeit in a closeup showing only its head.
*That leaves Evas-06, 07, 08, and 12. Eva-12 was severely damaged by Eva-02 (it was cut in half) so it is doubtful it was still functioning by the end of the battle. Eva-06 and Eva-07 apparently stopped moving after Eva-02 attacked them.
*However, out of all of the MP Evas, we never actually see Asuka defeat Eva-08; she simply cut its left leg off at the knee, it fell down, and she switched to fighting a different Eva. In that state, it was still almost entirely functional (that wouldn't have been a fight-ending injury even for Eva-02). Thus (unless Eva-02 attacked it more "off screen"), it was probably Eva-08 that threw the Spear which took out Eva-02.

*The original Spear of Longinus is capable of self-propulsion. Although the Spear that struck down Eva-02 was a replica Spear, it could have retained the original's "situational awareness" and self-propulsive abilities and reacted to the loss of all MP Evas by launching itself at Eva-02, leaving the question of which Eva carried the Spear moot.

Notes
*Several continuity errors in the animation of the Mass Production Evas in The End of Evangelion has led to some confusion: in several cuts, the MP Evas appear to have restored their severed limbs and regenerated their injuries. However, later cuts after these clearly show that they retain the damage sustained at the hands of Eva-02 through the end of the film (indeed, in a bit of morbid humor, one MP Eva whose head was impaled by spikes fired from Eva-02 retains the spikes impaled in its head through all subsequent appearances). This does raise the question of how the MP Eva that was completely cut in half through its waist was able to still move with the rest; it must be remembered that the MP Evas all have wings, and Asuka apparently didn't damage any of their wings, so even an MP Eva completely missing the lower half of its body could still fly around. Many of the shots we see after the battle with Eva-02 are just of MP Evas that were relatively lightly damaged, and the more severely damaged ones (specifically the one whose legs were completely cut off) just aren't focused on by the "camera" that much.
**The MP Eva whose arm was cut off at mid-humerus level is seen again with the severed arm just barely holding on to the rest of the Eva. It is possible that the MP Evas can somehow "glue" their dismembered parts together using their A.T. Fields, which would also explain how the one cut in half at waist level could take part in the slaughter of Eva-02 and initiating Third Impact.
*An animation continuity error occurs with Eva-09: when Asuka does her jump-attack against Eva-09, its upper jaw is clearly completely destroyed as Eva-02's hands push forward into its skull. However, when the MP Evas reactivate after Eva-02 is stabbed through the head, its brains are completely exposed (bits of pink brain matter are even falling out), but its upper jaw is still present, even though it should have been ripped off.
*Within the series, they are referred to either as "the Mass Production Evangelion Series" in full, or "the Eva Series" for short. Technically, "Eva Series" refers to every Evangelion ever made. This causes some small confusion when characters switch between talking about "the Eva Series" (the MP Evas) and more generally "the Eva Series" (all Evangelions created). "MP Evas" is never actually used on-screen, but is a common short hand way of referring to them.
*A popular and fairly wide-spread fan-nickname for the Mass Production model Evangelions is "harpies".
During NGE's original airing in Japan, a contest took place wherein original Angel designs were submitted to Gainax by viewers. The favored submission would appear in an original illustration by one of the Gainax artists. The results were published in the March 1996 issue of Animage, with the winner being Satou "Diemay" Daimei of Tokyo. His Angel was drawn by Yo Yoshinari in a face-off against Eva-01 in an image entitled "Eva's Final Battle" ("Eva Saishû Kessen"), with the note that the image had nothing to do with the actual ending that would eventually air.

Diemay's sketch includes the following notes:
* Angel's height: 100 m
* The core is on its forehead.
* The projection on the forehead is the Angel's "Charm Point".
* The first pair of arms contain "Deutron Rifles", which are, according to Diemay, "more powerful than the Positron Rifles of the Evas".
* The second pair bear claws of some sort.
Ursus, I haven't been keeping up with the Webuild hype. Could you upload the best screens available for the newbies? There are two "views" available for 06, I think, but what about 05? --Reichu 21:42, 30 December 2007 (PST)

I have to get them off the Rebuild 2.0 trailer on Youtube or Veoh. 05 was always in a dark shot(let me see...), but those two 06 views could do. I'm searching through google trying to get rebuild shots instead of junk images of the harpies instead. I'll let you know in a while. --UrsusArctos 21:50, 30 December 2007 (PST)
Don't have the torrent? Pics off that would probably be best. Drop NAvery one, maybe? --Reichu 22:20, 30 December 2007 (PST)

:I'm an idiot, Sandoz posted those ones on our forum just now. I guess i'll use his/her pics just for the time being and send him/her a pm. If ve objects to it, I'll remove them and get it off a video stream- those flash player ones I've seen about. I don't like Torrents, mainly because my internet connection can get very flaky at times. Didn't find any clearer ones on the internet, sadly.--UrsusArctos 00:46, 31 December 2007 (PST)
Where should we put things like T-Riden, Jet Alone upgrades, F-type equipment..? They're certainly related as material "outside of the main series canon". --Dr. Nick 04:14, 31 December 2007 (PST)

:Yeah, I was sort of wondering about the Toyota Land Cruiser and JA Butt Plug Model... Expand/rename this page to "Other Mecha" (since NGE considers Evas, Angels, and robots to all be "mecha")? F-Type equipment I was going to mention as an "aside" on a page about Eva special equipment, which I assume still doesn't exist yet. --Reichu 06:27, 31 December 2007 (PST)
::Just write it up Nick, I'll worry about where to put the information/article. --V 15:44, 1 January 2008 (PST)
Appearance: Illustration by Yo Yoshinari from Animage 3/96

* Angel's height: 100 m

Appearance: Illustration by Yo Yoshinari from Animage 3/96

* Angel's height: 100 m
* The core is on its forehead.
* The projection on the forehead is the Angel's "Charm Point".
* The first pair of arms contain "Deutron Rifles", which are, according to Diemay, "more powerful than the Positron Rifles of the Evas".
* The second pair bear claws of some sort.
A dinosaur-like robot developed by a rival of Nerv's. Musashi's land cruiser goes berserk in the game, and Nerv sorties the Evangelion Units to counter it.
Yamashita comments on the final design:
Since the creation process was completely finished, I was finally given notification of the official names: "Shinden" and "Raiden". Appearance: Neon Genesis Evangelion 2

A variant of the Jet Alone produced by the same organization, Japan Heavy Chemical Industries. It is connected to an external power source by a cable, and seems to have a generator plugged in to its behind. This model no longer has the extendable radio antennae as did the original Jet Alone, and replaces its open vents with wavy exhaust pipes that extend to the back of the unit. Other changes include more robust limbs as opposed to the seemingly flimsy ones of the first Jet Alone, and the large hammer with a central disc which it wields as a weapon. It eventually goes berserk and is confronted by the Evangelion Units.
An Angel whose design concept seems to take what Ritsuko said about Sandalphon's "chrysalis" to heart, by having the entity go through larval and pupal (chrysalis) stages before reaching adulthood ("imago"). It has no known name, although its Bandai Carddass cards refer to it as "Insubstantial Angel". Its core is contained within the body of Mayumi Yamagishi. Designed by the famous Mahiro Maeda.
|"Diemay Angel"
Appearance: Illustration by Yo Yoshinari from Animage 3/96

* Angel's height: 100 m
* The core is on its forehead.
* The projection on the forehead is the Angel's "Charm Point".
* The first pair of arms contain "Deutron Rifles", which are, according to Diemay, "more powerful than the Positron Rifles of the Evas".
* The second pair bear claws of some sort.
Appearance: Girlfriend of Steel
A dinosaur-like robot developed by a rival of Nerv's. Three were produced in total, each having a designated pilot around the Evangelion pilots' ages; these are Musashi Lee Strasberg, Keita Asari and Mana Kirishima. However, only two are ever seen onscreen and out of those two, only one is actually seen in action: Keita's is shown in one scene having fallen off a waterfall, and Mana's does not appear throughout. Musashi's land cruiser goes berserk in the game, and Nerv sorties the Evangelion Units to counter it.
Yamashita comments on the final design:
Since the creation process was completely finished, I was finally given notification of the official names: "Shinden" and "Raiden". Because I had wanted a class designation in the original name, the "mu" of "Gamu" (the mecha's temp name) was added onto "Raiden" as "T-RIDEN-T Class Land Cruiser".

* Angel's height: 100 m
* The core is on its forehead.
* The projection on the forehead is the Angel's "Charm Point".
* The first pair of arms contain "Deutron Rifles", which are, according to Diemay, "more powerful than the Positron Rifles of the Evas".
* The second pair bear claws of some sort.

* Angel's height: 100 m
* The core is on its forehead.
* The projection on the forehead is the Angel's "Charm Point".
* The first pair of arms contain "Deutron Rifles", which are, according to Diemay, "more powerful than the Positron Rifles of the Evas".
* The second pair bear claws of some sort.

Eva-00 was the first operational Evangelion. Being a prototype, it was not originally equipped for combat, but was later upgraded and brought into battle against the Angels.

As is the case for all the Evangelions, except Eva-01, the method of Eva-00's creation is not known. It is known, however, that she was the first working prototype after many failures. Whether the creation process was perfected with Eva-00, or if something new was tried would be pure conjecture.

What is known is that the original design for the prototype Eva had been created a long time ago; Fuyutsuki sees a mockup of Eva-00 in 2003, with the same orange and white color combination and the same head design. We also learn here that Eva-00 would have had a cluster of five cameras beneath its single eye lens.

Physical Features
The design of the helmet suggests that Eva-00's skull might be somewhat narrower than those of other Evangelions. The Eva's face has never been revealed on-screen, being covered by the helmet and faceplate at all times. Unique to Eva-00 is the large optical lens on its faceplate. In addition, the faceplate lacks nostril holes or a proper jawline. Monitor readouts of the Evangelion's internal organs reveal that it actually has two eyes as well as nostrils and a jawline.

.

Eva-00 originally had orange armor with large bulges at the shoulder and a different arrangement of plates from Eva-01 and the Production Model Evangelions, and it lacked Shoulder Pylons. After sustaining severe damage from the Angel Ramiel, Eva-00 was rebuilt with the same armor design as the production model Evangelions, along with a new blue color scheme, replacing the original orange. The repaired Eva-00 is also seen to possess retro-rockets in her shoulder pylons in Episode 11, as well as a Progressive Knife.

An early Eva-00 design seen in the Proposal has a head design identical to that used in the show. In addition, the blue color scheme is very similar to that used in the repaired Eva-00.

Soul
It is never directly stated what the identity of the soul contained in Eva-00 is, and this remains as one of the major mysteries of the series. Analysis of various clues and hints dropped through the series points to it being the soul of Rei 1, the first Rei Ayanami clone(or a part thereof) and not that of Naoko Akagi.
:For more in-depth analysis, see "Eva-00's soul"

Operational History
Evangelion Unit-00 has seen less action than the Test Type Eva-01 and the Production Model Eva-02, and largely in an auxiliary role until the end. The Eva was occasionally used to transport critical equipment; one example was when it carried parts for the positron rifle in Episode 05 and the Spear of Longinus at the end of Episode 14.

Although Eva-00 was the first working Evangelion out of a very long line of failed prototypes, it was not the first Evangelion to engage in combat with an Angel. That honor belongs to Eva-01. Eva-00 went berserk during an activation test 21 days before the Third Angel, Sachiel, arrived. During the incident the entry plug was ejected, Possibly by the Eva itself, resulting in serious injuries to the pilot, Rei Ayanami.

Following a successful activation test, Eva-00 went into battle against the Angel Ramiel in a critical support role, using a heat shield from an SSTO spacecraft to shield Eva-01 from the Angel's deadly particle beam. The Eva suffered severe thermal damage and had to undergo extensive repairs, including a complete replacement of the armor. Eva-00's new armor fit is identical to those used on Production Model Evangelions, including pylons.

Eva-00 saw combat again with the Ninth Angel, Matarael, although as a backup player. It again went into combat against the Tenth Angel, Sahaquiel, stopping it from overwhelming Eva-01 and opening its A.T. Field for Eva-02 to strike the fatal blow. The battle against the Angel Bardiel resulted in the loss of an arm and it lost its other arm and suffered critical skull damage during the battle against the Angel Zeruel.

The Eva finally got center stage during the battle against the orbital Angel Arael, throwing the original Spear of Longinus to destroy the Angel. It was lost in the battle with the Angel Armisael, during which it self destructed to destroy the Angel.

Eva-00 in Rebuild
Dated

Eva-00's Rebuild design has slightly altered proportions as compared to Eva-00 in the Anime, as well as an altered color scheme. Instead of an overall orange color scheme, the Rebuild version includes gray, colored lower legs and slight color alterations to its arms and chest area, as well as a prominent gray "waistband". Similar to its fate in Episode 06, it is severely damaged by the Angel Ramiel, although whether it will make a return with new armor remains to be seen.

"In Episode 16, Shinji is pulled down into the "shadow" of the Angel Leliel."

If I'm to trust the series, isn't the ball-in-the-sky object the actual shadow while the black circle on the ground the Angel itself? Would it be more concise, not to mention accurate, to say that Shinji is pulled down into the Angel?

For disambiguity, we could write "into the Angel Leliel's inverted AT Field" instead. Perhaps a slight detailing on the actual physics would be useful here. --AyrYntake 09:02 16 September 2008 (PST)
AyrYntake
