Suicide by opening a vein and immersing oneself in a warm bath (to prevent coagulation and closure of the wound) was a well-attested practice in Roman times, typically resorted to by those on the losing side of a political conflict, or those who had incured the wrath of the emperor, and were offered the option of taking the honorable way out (thereby sparing their families).
