223C

FUYUTSUKI:“Rei...”

223D

FUYUTSUKI:“She is the product of my despair and at the same time”

223E

FUYUTSUKI:“the vessel of your hope even now.”

223F

FUYUTSUKI:“In the end, I suppose it was unreasonable to expect you to forget.”

226

227

MISATO:“Yes, hello?”

228

MISATO:“What did you say?!”

229

MISATO:“Shinji!”

230

Hospital guide plate.

ANNOUNCEMENT:“Dr. Godai of Internal Medicine 1, Dr. Godai.”

231

The landscape outside the window, with Rei's hand in front.

ANNOUNCEMENT:“Please contact Conference Room 2 immediately.”

232

Rei is looking outside the window curiously. (She has injuries.)

SHINJI (OFF):“Ayanami!”

233

Rei turns around.
Her eyes have gone cold.

234

Guide plate.

TEXT:“Neurosurgery 1 Surgery 32nd Floor Ward Diagnostic Radiology X-ray Information Desk”

235

Corridor. Shinji and Rei maintaining a slight distance.
The large guide plate occupies the space between them.

SHINJI:“I'm so glad you're okay.”

Dr. Nick: Considering the AT Field hax we've seen in the series so far, Rei surviving with just minor injuries isn't even that far-fetched of a cover story. Let's remember that not that far back Ritsuko planned to drop 992 N2 bombs on unsuspecting Shinji.

236

Rei, still silent.

dzzthink: Funny how Rei has her right eye bandaged similar to Episode 4. The clone is obviously not injured so is this just how Nerv thinks injured people are supposed to look? I'd be surprised if Shinji actually bought it.

UrsusArctos: Shinji buying it or not doesn't seem to be point - I think they're trying to mess with Rei's memory in order for her to think she's in her previous, destroyed body. If that's their intention, the cheap trick of replicating her injuries from the Eva-00 berserk incident doesn't work one bit.

237

Rei and Shinji.

SHINJI:“I guess my dad's not here.”

238

Rei doesn't respond.

239

Rei and Shinji.

SHINJI:“Thank you for saving me.”

REI:“What do you mean?”

SHINJI:“What do I mean? You sacrificed Unit 00 to save me.”

REI:“I see, so I saved you.”

SHINJI:“Yeah, you don't remember?”

REI:“No, I just don't know.”

dzzthink: The gap between them is an obvious sign of the state of their relationship, where Shinji seems to notice something not quite right about Rei.

240

Rei, side UP.

REI:“Because I think I'm probably the third one.”

252

dzzthink: A lot of mysterious things to unpack here. Though Rei III is a clone, she begins crushing the memento that was cherished so much by the previous Rei. Rei III even feels confused by her tears, as if she only faintly remembers the memories from Rei II. In the end, we see that Rei III betrays Gendo in EoE and this scene here might be an early sign that Rei III does not have the same perceptions as the previous Rei. Though we see little of this Rei, there is a lot of mystery around what she retains from the previous clone and who she actually is.

253

REI:“These are tears? This should be the first time I've seen them, but I feel like this isn't the first time.”

254

REI:“Am I crying?”

255

REI:“Why am I crying?”

Dr. Nick: Broadly speaking each new Rei inherits the memories of the previous one (Rei III knows who Shinji is and so on), but it's unclear whether there is some information loss involved, or if this is a synching issue with the new body.

UrsusArctos: That seems debatable, since Rei 2 doesn't seem to have inherited the memories of little Rei 1 being strangled by Naoko as a child - all indications are that the memory went into Eva-00 and the Rei inside. Gendo probably backed up Rei's memories periodically, hence this incarnation doesn't consciously remember information that happened after the backup, like saving Shinji in Cut 239. However, she seems to have the soul segments from both previous incarnations, hence subconsciously remembering things that she has no conscious recollection of.

Dr. Nick That's certainly a possibility. Perhaps memory backup is what the mystery tube is for.:

256

IKARI:“That's right. The First Child will be maintained in her current condition. There is no need for new restrictions. The same goes for the Second and the Third. They only need to be watched.”

257

FUYUTSUKI:“But Chairman Kiel and the rest will raise a fuss when they learn that Rei is alive.”

258

IKARI:“I have offered something else to Seele's old men. We needn't worry.”

UrsusArctos: Gendo really should have known better, and his "offering" comes back to haunt him.
