"Evangelion 1.0" "Evangelion 3.0"

Evangelion 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance (ヱヴァンゲリヲン新劇場版:破) is the second film in the Rebuild of Evangelion movie series. It premiered in Japan on June 27, 2009. Also, two trailers were released, along with a poster revealing key terms and names from the movie in chronological order.

The movie introduced Asuka Langley Shikinami (formerly "Soryu", and now with the rank of Captain), Ryoji Kaji, and the new character Mari Illustrious Makinami, along with Eva-02, Eva-03, Eva-05, and Eva-06. A combination of familiar (to NGE veterans) and newly-designed Angels appeared over the course of the film. New locations (such as Bethany Base and Tabgha Base) were also featured.

Eva 2.0 departed from the original much more extensively than 1.0, with a greater emphasis on new material. Elements from several TV episodes are present in some form, namely Episodes 08, 09, 12, 15, 17, 18, and 19.

Yuko Miyamura and Koichi Yamadera both reprised their roles as Asuka and Kaji, respectively, and Maaya Sakamoto joined the cast to play Mari. Mugihito is listed in the credits as specifically playing "Keel Lorenz" (he only appeared as the "SOUND ONLY" Seele-01 monolith in the first film).[1]

Plot

The movie opens in Bethany Base, a joint U.S./Russian Nerv base. Mari is seen in Evangelion Unit-05. The Third Angel is escaping, and Mari is out to stop it in a series of corridors and tunnels. Kaji is seen along with the head of Bethany base and several English-speaking Nerv personnel. Mari narrowly misses catching the Angel in a dark tunnel, and pursues it to an open area with giant columns which it reaches with the aid of an A.T. Field based cutting mechanism. Eva-05 pins the Angel against a column and proceeds to crush the core, but Eva-05 is badly damaged by the Angel's retaliatory eyebeams. Mari ejects before Eva-05 self-destructs, taking the Angel's remains along with it. She proceeds to view the explosions from her Entry Plug while floating in a red ocean, while Kaji flies away from the scene in an aircraft.

Next, Shinji and Gendo are seen having a conversation at Yui's grave, which is on a mountainside entirely covered in the graves of those lost in Second Impact. Gendo is soon picked up by a Nerv hoverjet carrying Rei as a passenger. Shinji calls out to Gendo when he sees Rei, but quickly says that he was happy to talk to him. Misato takes Shinji home in the car, but en route they are nearly crushed by a warship gun turret that comes flying onto the road.

The cause is another new Angel, which has a vaguely clock-like head, long legs, and what looks like a huge pendulum bob between its legs. As it walks through the red ocean, the water freezes wherever it steps. A destroyed warship (presumably the source of the turret) reveals the enormous size of the Angel. The Angel destroys multiple attacking warships by causing the water underneath them to rise in cross-shaped columns. As Misato orders Nerv's Evas to intercept the Angel, Eva-02 arrives, dropping from a giant carrier aircraft along with a huge crossbow. Eva-02 dodges an array of tentacles from the Angel and proceeds to easily destroy it . Misato's car is sent spinning by the backblast from Eva-02's rockets as it touches down and comes to rest beside Eva-00. The pilot of Eva-02, Captain Asuka Langley Shikinami, introduces herself to Shinji, Toji and Kensuke in the same distinctive fashion as Asuka Langley Soryu, and takes an immediate dislike to Rei Ayanami.

Kaji is seen handing Gendo a case containing a key, part of which looks like a human nervous system. Gendo calls it the "Key of Nebuchadnezzar", the key to instrumentality. Kaji has a conversation with Ritsuko, in the presence of an annoyed Misato.

Asuka arrives in Misato's apartment, tossing out Shinji's belongings and complaining about the small size of the place in very much the same manner as in the TV series. Like Shinji in Episode 02 and Evangelion 1.0, Asuka has a horribly embarrassing encounter with Pen Pen in the bathroom and comes running out naked. Shinji sees Asuka naked and lands up getting kicked in the face. At night, Asuka talks to herself, playing with a finger puppet.

Kaji takes Shinji, Asuka, Rei, Toji, Kensuke and Pen-Pen to a maritime preservation zone where the last marine animals are kept alive and the red ocean water is purified to make it habitable. Rei, alone with Shinji, compares her existence to that of fish in a tank, with a miffed Asuka seeing them and then playing a videogame in a corner. Shinji has prepared a box lunch for everyone, but Rei declines to eat until Shinji offers her some Miso soup, which she finds delicious.

Kaji tells Shinji of Misato's past and Second Impact. Several flashback images appear: the sky turns red and a black hole appears. Four light bodies with halos appear (the Adams), as well as several red Longinus spears.

Gendo and Fuyutsuki visit a base on the moon. They see Kaworu outside the window sitting shirtless on one of Eva-06 fingers, and while Fuyutsuki says that a human outside is impossible, Kaworu turns (to Gendo?) and says "Welcome, father."

Sahaquiel appears. At first, it is just a rotating multi-eyed ball in space, impervious to N2 attacks. Misato and the rest realize that is a living bomb that will drop at Tokyo-3, and she plans to intercept it with the Evas. Ritsuko argues about how foolish the plan is. Asuka is also not happy because she wanted to do it alone. Sahaquiel unfolds itself and becomes a multicolored eye with big hands. The Evas rush to the impact zone with the help of special buildings (ramps, jumping spots...) and Shinji is the first one to arrive. Eva-01 stops it, but from the center appears a humanoid shape with a Gaghiel-like face which impales Eva-01 with its drill arms. Asuka tries to stab the core, but it begins to move, so she is unable to hit it until Ayanami appears and holds the core with her hands. The Angel is destroyed, flooding the city with blood. Via a voice only communication, Gendo praises his son.

That night, Asuka is unable to sleep beacause she can't do everything alone, and goes into Shinji's room. She asks him why he pilots the Eva and he responds that he doesn't know but he's happy when his father praises him. Asuka says that he's an idiot.

Shinji makes daily boxed lunches for Misato, Asuka and himself, but one day, was unable to do it, and Asuka yells at him. This prompts Toji to joke that they seem a married couple, so Shinji and Asuka blush. The next day he also makes lunch for Ayanami, who thanks him in surprise, while an angry Asuka watches.

After a session in the LCL tube, Rei and Gendo go to eat together. Rei wants to have a dinner with everyone and asks Gendo to come too. He looks at Rei and for a moment he sees Yui's face, so Gendo accepts. Rei, learning how to cook, cuts several fingers. Asuka sees Rei's cuts and she tries cooking too. Rei sends out invitations to the party to everyone, even Asuka.

Mari comes by parachute to Japan and lands on Shinji. She talks by the phone in English saying that the landing point was diverted and before leaving, tells Shinji he smells nice, like LCL.

Shinji, sitting near the vending machines, is looking at his music player which no longer works after the crash with Mari. Kaji appears and approaches Shinji's face as if he's going to kiss him, scaring Shinji. They go to the watermelon field and Kaji asks if he likes Misato. An ashamed Shinji stammers "yes, no... I mean..." and Kaji asks him to protect Misato because he's no longer able to do so himself.

After Eva-04 disappears along with the American Nerv base, it is decided to bring Eva-03 to Japan. They enclose Eva-02 in what looks like a lava pit because by treaty Nerv is not alowed to base more than three Evas in the same country. This angers Asuka, who meets with Rei in the elevator. After a brief silence, Rei begins to speak about what it means to be an Eva pilot, and an angry Asuka tries to slap her. Asuka stops and asks what she feels for Shinji, and Rei says that she doesn't know, but when she is with him she feels warm. An angry Asuka leaves, calling her an idiot.

Eva-03 arrives and Asuka is chosen as test pilot. She calls up Misato and has a fairly long talk with her on the phone before she heads for the Eva. Inside the Entry Plug, all becomes red, then blue. Asuka is sucked into the depths of the Entry Plug and Eva-03 is taken over by Bardiel, setting off an explosion.

Shinji is on his the way to Rei's apartment for the party when he receives the emergency call; Gendo in his car does a U-turn and Rei, cooking for the party, is interrupted by Nerv employees.

The Bardiel battle is similar to the series, but this time Eva-01 is the only Eva involved. Shinji refuses to fight because Asuka is inside. Being choked, Shinji manages to hold the infected Eva's hands, but another pair of arms grows from the shoulders and begin to overpower Eva-01. Gendo orders the Dummy System activated. Inside the entry plug all monitors are jammed in red, Shinji's arms are locked and a monitor appears in front of his face. A berserker Eva-01 begins to tear Bardiel in a feral way, punching, bitting and shredding, and at the end bites the Entry Plug.

The scene cuts to a crazed Shinji stomping on the top of Nerv pyramid and yelling at his father until Gendo orders the LCL pressure to be increased, knocking him unconscious. In a red chamber with pillars, Asuka is seen in a medical machine similar to the one that enclosed Shinji after the disastrous first encounter with Ramiel, with Ritsuko and Maya looking on. Only Asuka's hair can be seen, the rest is tubes and lights.

A vision scene of Shinji in a train car begins. He talks with Rei and, after a while, with a his younger self. They speak of Shinji's not trying to understand his father, and that the music player that he carries was once his father's. When he awakes, he is handcuffed and brought in front of Gendo. Shinji quits as pilot and leaves Nerv.

In the apartment, Misato tries to convince Shinji to stay, but he leaves. Rei finds the music player trashed in a bin and takes it.

Mari, in a pink plugsuit, releases Eva-02 from captivity and gets into it. Kaworu, on the moon and in a plugsuit of his own, prepares to descend to Earth in his Eva.

Zeruel attacks, appearing at first as a mummy-like version of the old design. With a single beam it inflicts severe damage to Tokyo-3's defenses. We see Kensuke, Hikari and Toji, the latter trying to protect Hikari as missiles crash into Zeruel and explode ineffectually. Zeruel "unwraps" itself, revealing tentacle-like extensions that can be united to form drills.

Mari and the hijacked Eva-02 confront Zeruel inside the Geofront. Unable to cause any damage, she activates "Beast Mode"; several cylinders emerge from the Eva's back and shoulders, Eva-02 goes berserk and Mari is growling like a beast with glowing green eyes as well. Zeruel nevertheless is quick to inflict crippling injuries to her Eva, cutting one arm and piercing the Eva's body.

Rei appears with a missile that is blocked by the AT-Field. For a moment, we see the music player inside the entry plug. An agonized Eva-02 crawls to her side and bites the field until it breaks. At the last moment, Zeruel blocks it's core with an odd fang-like shield. Rei yells "Pilot of 02, escape!" and throws the body of Eva-02 away as the missle detonates. The nearly destroyed Eva-02 lands in Shinji's shelter, and manages to take an unwilling Shinji outside. He sees the utter devastation all around, with a completely burnt Eva-00 in the middle. A Gaghiel-like mouth emerges from Zeruel and eats Eva-00 knees up, spitting out the helmet.

Zeruel transforms into a a giant naked Rei with Zeruel's face and tentacles that resemble a wig. Shocked, Shinji yells that he wants to save Ayanami and goes to pilot Eva-01. Meanwhile, Gendo is trying to activate Eva-01 with the Dummy System, but is rejected. While he is saying "Why you do this, Yui?", Shinji appears begging to pilot. Zeruel appears in front of Misato and the rest in the main bridge; Eva-01 arrives, and begins the battle, losing an arm in the process and splashing Gendo with blood. Eva-01 drags Zeruel back to the surface with a catapult, and fights until it runs out of power. Zeruel impales Eva-01 and a black silhouette of Shinji spits blood. In a pitch black entry plug, Shinji's eyes glow red and he yells "Give Ayanami back", and Eva-01 goes berserk. Zeruel attacks but is easily blocked by Eva-01's A.T. Field. The missing arm is now a modified A.T. Field, the green stripes became glowing red and a halo appears. Eva-01's eyes spark and Zeruel is cut in half. Eva-01 slowly aproaches the half dead body of Zeruel, while Misato, the main bridge crew, Kaji and a wounded Mari look on in awe; Gendo watches stoically.

Both Eva-01 and Zeruel begin to float, and Shinji rips a hole in Zeruel's core trying to save Ayanami. Eventually he finds her crouching naked in the darkness. Rei is reluctant to go, but at the end she gives her hand to Shinji, who drags her to the now completely bright entry plug. They embrace, and Shinji says "Thank you" for her efforts to do a dinner party with Shinji and Gendo. Ayanami apologizes because she was unable to do it at the end. The body of Zeruel, now a completely red giant Ayanami, including the head, fuses with Eva-01. The sky turns red and a black hole appears, sucking the wrecked city into it. Misato and the rest realize that this is the beginning of Third Impact.

The credits roll.

A spear comes from the sky and impales Eva-01, stopping Third Impact. Kaworu descends in Eva-06, saying "Shinji, this time only you will find happiness"[2].

To be continued.

In the pamphlet, there is the full transcription of the preview: "Eva-01 frozen with Shinji and Rei trapped inside. The fortress which is disposed. Nerv personal confined. Eva-06 dropped in Dogma. Quickening (fetal movement?) Eva-08 and his pilot. Children fated to meet gathered at last. Where does the story of people wishing to live lead?"

Angels

Based on the scant available information (namely poster key words and the trailers), the film appears to feature five Angels, including two that are original to the Rebuild continuity. In the potential order of appearance:

Third Angel The Third Angel of the Rebuild continuity. It fights Eva-05 amidst a maze of underground tunnels and corridors in Bethany Base. Possesses a stylized "skull" face, exposed jaw muscles like Gaghiel, and a narrow body with what looks like a long, skeletal tail, and is capable of setting off explosions using its eye sockets.

File:Eva2-0 trailer2 C18.jpg
Seventh(?) Angel:

Arrives over the ocean, and is fought in Eva-02's debut battle. It is extremely tall, with very long legs- scale is provided by a destroyed warship. The face resembles the hands of a clock, with a Sachiel-like face acting as the "first hand", and a red "second hand" (another face facing the opposite direction) behind this. Both are supported by a tall, thin "neck", with an octahedral structure enclosing the core. When a "foot" touches the water, an A.T. Field-like projection spreads out and causes what appears to be instantaneous frosting.

The new Aerial Recon S-Type Equipment is used in battle to deal with the issue of the Angel's size.

Sahaquiel: The Angel Sahaquiel appears again. Its initial form is a black sphere in space with a multitude of eyes. Following an ineffectual N2 aerial depth charge attack (corresponding to the N2 bombing of Sahaquiel in Episode 12), Sahaquiel plunges down to Tokyo-3, changing form as it does so. All three Evas (Eva-01, Eva-02 and Eva-00) take part in the Sahaquiel-"catching" operation.
Bardiel: As in Episode 18, Eva-03 is possessed by Bardiel. Only Eva-01 is available to stop its advance, and is ultimately activated on the dummy system to destroy it. The glowing blue mass covering the top of the entry plug emerging from Eva-03's back as visible from the second trailer is confirmed to be part of the Bardiel growth.
Zeruel: The design of the face has been changed slightly, although the body has undergone significant modifications, sporting a "mummy-like" appearance. The battle against Zeruel results in the Angel's defeat by Eva-01, but the battle and its conclusion are otherwise vastly different from the battle in Episode 19.

Trailer Summaries

These will be trimmed down to resemble "summaries" somewhat more when the movie is actually released.

Preview

"ADAMS"
Mari looks at an array of glowing crosses

A preview following the credits of Eva 1.0, structured the same as the "Next Episode Previews" in Neon Genesis Evangelion, complete with the same musical theme, voice-over by Misato, and promise of more fan service.

It opens with an introduction to the Evas scheduled to appear: The "provisional" Eva-05 on an underground rail, Eva-02 being air-dropped (outfitted with the new "S-type Equipment"), Eva-04's explosion, Eva-03 (infected by Bardiel), and Eva-06 descending from the Moon. The text "ADAMS" and a cryptic image of several ghostly, vaguely humanoid figures are flashed on the screen. The text "LILIN+?" then appears, followed by several shots of the "human" cast: Kaji and Gendo (as seen at the end of Episode 08); Misato slapping Ritsuko (recycled from Episode 16); Asuka, Rei, and Shinji (from the Zeruel battle in 19); and Kaworu (smiling against a dusky sky). Finally, the new character Mari is seen from behind, looking up at multiple giant glowing pink crucifixes, followed by a close-up of her face, a fleeing flock of birds reflected in her glasses.

Theatrical Trailer #1

Released in Japanese cinemas on March 14, 2009, set to "FLY ME TO THE MOON (IN OTHER WORDS) 2007 MIX" by Hikaru Utada (same as 1.0's theatrical trailer). Yahoo! Japan subsequently released a 27 second long "special version" edit, which rehashed some of the clips to a remix of the "Next Episode Preview" theme, along with hosting the original theatrical trailer[3].

It opens showing Mari's Eva-05 switching power supplies, and Eva-01 rearing up and roaring under the influence of the dummy system, with blood from Eva-03 (offscreen) flying into the air. Eva-05 is seen again, along with another scene of Eva-01 in the process of destroying Eva-03. Several scenes from the Sahaquiel-catching operation are seen, although the Angel itself is obscured in the trailer. Scenes of characters in conversation follow, at various locations including Yui's grave and the Misato's apartment. A spacecraft is seen heading for Tabgha base on the moon. More city and environmental shots are followed by the attacks of Zeruel as well as the maritime battle with the (as-yet-unnamed) Seventh Angel. More scenes of characters follow, the trailer ending with Shinji standing at Yui's grave watching Gendo to fly away before leaving.

Eva-01.
Asuka.

Several character shots follow:

  • Shinji wearing a polo shirt, hanging onto a railing and talking to someone (Kaji?). Probably on a ship.
  • Misato, with a dusky sky in the background, smiling and talking.
  • Asuka in plugsuit, standing on top of Eva-02 (?), with hands on hips. Followed by a closeup of Asuka talking with an intense look on her face. (Similar to when she tells Shinji in Episode 08, "Come with me.")
  • Rei sitting in her dimly-lit apartment, looking at something in her hands.
  • Gendo with VTOL in background. (Presumably being picked up from Yui's grave site.)
  • A flustered-looking Ritsuko (apparently arguing with someone).
  • Shinji in what seems to be Misato's storage room (i.e., after getting kicked out of his by Asuka), wearing SDAT earbuds, hoisting himself off the floor.

Several "environmental" shots follow, including:

  • An elevated railway lane forming.
  • School girls ascending a building's exterior staircase, with a male student in the foreground leaning against a railing.
  • Tokyo-3 in the mist.
  • A flock of crows aggregated on telephone pole wires. (Corresponds to a shot from Episode 18.) A streetlight attached to the pole turns on.
  • A space vehicle above Tabgha (misspelled "Tagbha") Base, apparently on the Moon's surface.
  • Buildings rising up from the ground.
  • People on a crosswalk over several train tracks.
  • Tokyo-3's array of mirror buildings shifting position.
  • A train emerging from a subterranean tunnel.

Several action shots follow:

Eva-02.
  • Enigmatic shot of what seems to be an Angel, walking on the ocean. (See Angels.)
  • Eva-03 descending from a jump, seen from below. The shot ends with a super-closeup of the Eva's eye.
  • Scene set in orbit above Earth, showing multiple spacecraft facing off against something obscured behind a "multicellular" A.T. Field. Probably the bombardment of Sahaquiel with N2 depth charges only mentioned in the original show.
  • Closeup of a previously unseen Angel's face, unleashing a blast via eyes.
  • A row of tanks unleashing fire.
  • Eva-01 running through a city. (From Sahaquiel operation.)
  • Eva-05 in dark environs. Two of its legs fly past the camera as it spins around.
  • Missile silo.
  • Eva-02 holding up (and breaking through?) Sahaquiel's A.T. Field. At the end of the cut, it rapidly draws up its knee (as if mid-kick).
  • Zeruel, unleashing a cross-blast.
  • A ship being consumed by a giant spout of water from below.
  • Giant explosion between two hills in the distance, with a reddish dome and a large halo.
  • Red fluid flooding a town or city. (Possibly the dissolved body of an Angel.)
Shinji.

It closes with more character shots:

  • Shinji seen from the side, with the red ocean behind him and a flooded settlement at the horizon. Wearing the polo shirt.
  • Mari inside some kind of cockpit, wearing her "05" plugsuit, rearing up and rapidly looking to one side. Her face is obscured by a giant helmet with "EVANGELION-05 PROVISIONAL" written across the red visor, and the plugsuit has two large green cables plugged into it somewhere off-screen.
  • Asuka sitting in front of an aquarium, picking up a small electronic device.
  • Gendo and Fuyutsuki standing near one another. A tree-lined coastline with normal (not red) water is visible beyond the window.
  • Kaworu, gazing towards the camera while the Earth pans rapidly behind him.
  • Toji and Kensuke chatting in the classroom. Shinji is standing nearby and looks away (at Rei?).
  • Kaji leaning back, smoking a cigarette. Possibly on a ship, talking to Shinji.
  • Misato hoisting herself off her car. Dusk.
  • Asuka laying on a futon. She rolls over to one side and looks at something.
  • Rei sitting alone at school.
  • Aerial shot of Shinji standing at his mother's grave, presumably watching Gendo fly away. He walks off-camera and 2.0's title comes onscreen, thus ending 2.0's theatrical trailer much the same as 1.0's ended.

Theatrical Trailer #2

Released to Japanese cinemas on April 25, 2009, the Bandai Channel on May 8, 2009[4], and set to a bombastic choral/instrumental piece, "The Final Decision We All Must Take" by Shiro Sagisu.

Deep blue sea.

It opens with scenic and character shots:

  • A pristine blue ocean with coral and live fish.
  • A row of panels extending horizontally across the screen and flipping, a reflective building behind them.
  • Basketball being shot through a hoop.
  • Gendo standing at his desk with what looks like the case containing Adam. Fuyutsuki in background.
  • Toji in jogging suit, making a gesture of distaste at something he's holding.
  • A doll, with the word "Asuka" barely visible on it. (Vaguely resembles a hand puppet version of Kyoko's rag doll.)
  • Asuka stirring in her sleep. (Dim lighting.)
  • Shinji lying on his side, looking at someone and smiling.
  • Closeup of Rei, immersed in what looks like LCL, wearing some kind of choker.

Shots of Evas and Angels:

Eva-01's eye
  • Closeup of Eva-01's eye opening, glowing red. (After being activated on the dummy system?)
  • Eva-03 somersaulting into Eva-01.
  • "Tunnel Angel" moving through burning wreckage. (See Angels.)
  • Eva-05 thrusting its lance weapon forward.
  • Closeup of "Clock Angel". (See Angels.)
  • Eva-03 landing on all fours. (After somersaulting into Eva-01.)
  • Eva-03's chest plate being thrown into a hillside.
  • "Tunnel Angel" from behind, with the long tail undulating towards the camera.
  • Eva-03 slowly advancing, framed by the setting sun.
  • Eva-03's disembodied arm crashing into a group of houses.
  • Eva-02 (outfitted with S-Type Equipment) rolled up, revolving forward rapidly in mid-air toward the camera.
  • Dropped pallet rifle upright on the ground, slowly falling backwards.

More character shots:

Kaji.

  • Shots of Shinji and Rei looking through a glass aquarium, with Rei speaking.
  • Asuka in plugsuit, with Shinji (wearing regular clothes) falling backwards into the foreground.
  • Ritsuko slowly looking over her shoulder. Sitting in front of a computer, with a stethoscope around her neck.
  • Kaji at the melon patch (?), with a pink towel draped around his neck.
  • Shinji slowly getting to his feet, after looking at Kaji's melons? Underground lake in background.
  • Mari glancing over her shoulder, pushing a button on her cell phone.

More action shots:

Eva-02 crouching.
  • Closeup of airborne Eva-02's back with S-Type Equipment outfitted.
  • Eva-02's foot landing on a device holding a "Thunder Spear" weapon, activating the release mechanism.
  • Closeup of Eva-01 flying backwards into the ground (after Eva-03's somersault attack).
  • Eva-02 falling back-first onto a Tokyo-3 building, and immediately flipping into a crouching position.
  • Vast blue sky with a large aircraft, escorted by fighters, dropping a bowgun.
  • Multi-color scan of entry plug interior (?).
  • Closeup of Eva-01's foot buckling and the heel digging into the ground (while trying to hold up Sahaquiel).
  • Closeup of Eva-01 being thrown into the mountain road (by Eva-03).
  • Under-shot through a steel tower and power lines, with closely-packed aircraft filling the sky.
  • Eva-01 dashing towards the foreground (low angle shot), train line visible at bottom left.

More character shots:

Mari in cockpit.
  • Two people (probably Asuka and Shinji; can only see them from the legs down) sharing the same futon. The one in striped panties is lying on top of the sheets.
  • Rei with an expression of confusion or shock on her face, standing in front of a man (wearing black, but identify can't be confirmed; only his shoulder is visible). There's smoke or vapor rising off something the man is holding (also not visible).
  • Asuka in casual clothes, turning towards the camera with an irritated expression.
  • Shinji in the dark storage room, putting down his cellphone.
  • Piloting shots of Mari (with visor) and Shinji.
  • Closeup of Gendo doing his "pose".
  • Shots of Misato and Ritsuko on the bridge, with red emergency lighting.
  • Piloting shots of Rei and Asuka.

And finally:

  • Low-angle shot of Eva-02 falling out of the sky towards the camera, bracing a weapon (Thunder Spear?), blade pointed downwards.
