List of places. Both Real-Life and In-Universe descriptions should be added.

Izu Peninsula(伊豆半島, Izu-Hantou)

A popular recreational area for people in the Tokyo region, the Izu peninsula is above all known for its onsen hot springs. The peninsula abuts Mt. Fuji and is a part of Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park.

Izu being one of Japan's biggest producers of wasabi(paste used as a flavoring for Sushi), the local cuisine offers many wasabi-flavored dishes. Some famous towns and popular tourist attractions include old Shuzenji with its temples, onsens, waterfalls, ryokans, and Shimoda, the landing site of Commodore Perry's infamous fleet of black ships.

In-universe- In the series, the battle against Gaghiel is fought as the Naval Convoy passes over the submerged city of Ito, identified by street signs on the display screen.

Tokyo

Hakone

Hakone (箱根町, Hakone-machi?) is a town in Japan, in Kanagawa Prefecture, in Ashigarashimo District. Located on the eastern foot of Hakone Pass.

Hakone hosts substantial tourist activity, and many, both Japanese and international visitors come to Hakone to relax, for treatment at the health resorts, or to visit the parks and mountains.

The volcanically active Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, centered around Lake Ashi, is a popular tourist attraction well known for its onsen hot springs and its views of Mt. Fuji.

Sights include the volcanically active Great Boiling Valley and Hakone Shrine nestled on the shore of the lake, as well as the Hakone Botanical Garden of Wetlands. In April the cherry blossoms (sakura) and in autumn the Chinese silvergrass (susuki, Miscanthus sinensis) are reportedly a very beautiful view in the parks.

Odawara

Odawara (小田原市, Odawara-shi?) is a city located in Kanagawa, Japan

Lake Ashi (Ashinoko)

Lake Ashi (芦ノ湖, Ashino-ko?), or Hakone Lake, is a scenic lake in the Hakone area of Kanagawa Prefecture in Honshū, Japan. It is a crater lake that lies along the southwest wall of the caldera of Mount Hakone, a complex volcano. The lake is known for its views of Mt. Fuji and its numerous hot springs. Several pleasure boats and ferries traverse the lake, providing scenic views for tourists and passengers

Atsugi

Atsugi is a city in the Kanagawa Prefecture of Japan. Apart from being a satellite city for the Tokyo-Yokohama metropolitan area, it is also known for the United States Navy base at Naval Air Facility Atsugi, which actually is not in Atsugi but straddles the border between the neighbouring cities of Ayase and Yamato.

Atsugi AFB

http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/facility/atsugi.htm Naval Air Facility Atsugi is the largest US Navy air base in the Pacific and houses Carrier Air Wing 5, which deploys with the carrier USS Kitty Hawk. Atsugi is shared with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense force.

Iruma

Iruma (入間市, Iruma-shi?) is a city in Saitama Prefecture, near Tokyo, and is located on the island of Honshū.

Iruma Air Base, being located in Iruma and Sayama, takes its name from its host city. Iruma Air Base is a facility of the Air Self Defence Force. Aircraft based here are YS-11, Kawasaki T-4, and Kawasaki C-1. The base holds an Aircraft Festival annually in early November. This air base was once known as Johnson Air Base while under the control of the United States Air Force.

The city was founded on November 1, 1966.

Okinawa

Dumping Ground

Putting random geography notes deleted from the episode pages here until this article can be organized. The announcer at the beginning of the Episode-01 says that "a special state of emergency has been declared for the Kanto and Chubu regions"; Tokai is the district between Tokyo and Nagoya. Kanto and Chubu contains Tokai and the large area north of it. Geography-wise, Sachiel approaches Tokyo-3 from coast to the east, and is said to be "moving from Highway 83 onto 88" when it arrives at Shinji's original position. When Shinji first appears at a phone booth before he arrives in Tokyo-3 itself, a road sign he is standing right next to says that his current position is 12 kilometers from Tokyo-3 and 35 kilometers from Gotenba. Also, an aviation support unit spreads "from the direction of Odawara". Soon afterwards Sachiel "penetrates the Tonosawa area" crossing the "tertiary self-defense line".

  • The N² Mine used against Sachiel by the JSSDF in Episode 1 was detonated on Mt. Takanosu.
  • More names are dropped(in Episode 03) from the geography of Japan: Kensuke says that for the fight against Sachiel, "Not only were Iruma and Komatsu dispatched, they brought in troops from Misawa and Kyushu". Kyushu is the southernmost of Japan's four main islands, while Misawa is the location of a real-life military base in Aomori Prefecture in the extreme north of Honshu (the main island of Japan, which Tokyo-3 is also located on). Its mentioned that "Anti-aircraft system is on standby from Odawara to the Gora defense line." Odawara is on the coast east of Tokyo-3, and Gora lies between them. Where Shamshel actually reaches the shore near a lighthouse is said in the production notes to be in the vicinity of Manazuru.
  • In Episode 04, the series of large mountain terraces that Shinji walks up (before he encounters Kensuke) is the real-life Owakudani area. Owakudani is the area around a crater created in the last eruption of Mount Hakone 3000 years ago. Sulfurous fumes, hot springs and hot rivers can be experienced on a walk around the area. It is also a famous suicide site. When Shinji is standing on top of the mountain terrace and stands near the edge of a cliff, he appears to be contemplating suicide However, if Shinji was contemplating suicide he apparently didn't have the courage to go through with it. Series creator Hideaki Anno has himself commented on Shinji by saying that he is a boy who doesn't even have the courage to kill himself.
  • In Episode 05, geography-wise, Ramiel first appears from over the sea, and approaches Tokyo-3 by passing "over Tonosawa".
  • Geography-wise, subtitles at the end of Episode 08 explain that "New Yokosuka" is actually the city formerly known as Odawara. Previously, the Angel Shamshel approached Tokyo-3 by making landfall at Odawara, and Sachiel also came from the eastern coast. Here, "New Yokosuka" appears to be the primary port serving Tokyo-3, which is landlocked, given that Eva-02 is delivered to Tokyo-3 via this point.
